Gave Jack White's new one its first listen during the school run this morning. Good first impressions - its exactly how you would expect a solo album to sound. Next up is the new one from his chum, Brendan Benson

Still on my Band/Levon binge. Today it's "the brown album", official title "The Band".

Something I am enjoying is the vocal blend. It's unusual in that they're such different vocalists. Levon Helm is really a bluegrass/country singer and sounds like a good old boy from Arkansas (which is what he was), Richard Manuel, to my ears, is really a soul singer with a great falsetto, Rick Danko is Dylan-ish, though with a better range. This gives them a great range. They can match the lead singer to the song, and they get interesting combinations with backing vocals and ensemble singing.

Damien Rice, got hold of a video "9 Crimes", my first exposure to his music. Quite a haunting and interesting song.

What is his other stuff like?

I really like him - great songwriter and some amazing tracks. More of a fan of O, his debut, than 9, his follow up, 9 is more 'poppier' in a sense. Have a great live concert of his that I downloaded from somewhere. Almost got to see him live when I was in Manchester in 2007 but was sold out with minutes.

Ahh Squonk I can't believe you have only just discovered him. 'O' is an awesome album and worth getting immediately. 9 Crimes is also good but 'O' really set the bar high!

I remember watching Blowers Daughter with just him and an acoustic on 'Later with Jools# and I even said to my wife "who is this goon, here we go!" but by the end of the song I was transformed! Went to see him shortly after at Shepherds Bush Empire and it is still up there with the best gigs I have ever seen. Also had Rodrigo & Gabriela support him that night which was kind of odd but a great support act for guitarists!

Seen him again since but not quite the same impact!

I haven't listened to it for years. I rediscovered an old joy which is Larry Carlton's fab rhythm playing. Such a complete player.

Very nice. First time I saw them they were playing at a a very strange acoustic gig with Arno Carstens and they were totally awesome. The only thing "acoustic" about their set was that their drummer used a tambourine and a kahon instead of a drum-kit. The bass was DI'd and Jacques guitar went into the mud honey and then into my deville.

They totally deserve their SAMA!

Richard & Linda Thompson - Hokey Pokey

I find it an exhausting listen because it paints such an unremittingly bleak picture of the human condition. However, something else is catching my ear - Thompson's old mate Simon Nicol turning in a marvellous, understated performance in the role that should be called "supporting guitar".

This is hugely GOOD STUFF!

Guitar like you have never heard before. Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew are excellent form. Tony Levin on Bass and Bill Bruford on Drums are no slouches either.

Interesting composition and time signatures. A compulsory listen! Do it now.

Slade Alive - The live Album that launched their career. IMHO one of the best Live Albums, up there with The Who "Live at Leeds"
They were a tight rock and roll band and they do a great cover of "Born to be Wild" on this album.
Noddy Holder has a voice that can shatter windows, and he is on target on this album.

Ten Years After - Stonedhenge

I can still remember in my early days of Rock music, all the stories and legends that Alvin Lee was the fastest guitarist alive. Things have changed a bit since then, he is fast but not that clean. Remember 'I'm Going Home" on Woodstock.
This album displays a bit more of his blues roots. Still undecided if he is as great as the Legend. Some good tracks none the less.

Strange enough Slade do a great version of Ten Years After's "Hear me Calling" on the Slade Alive Album, The Ten Years After version is more a typical English Blues version in the John Mayall mode.
