I'm voting for Hendrix, but I agree with Alan that it's not a competition. This is all about personal taste. I don't like Vai or Gilbert very much and I can't really listen to their music for more than 5 minutes without being bored out of my mind, but other folks here will think that Hendrix was just making noise or that Clapton hasn't played a decent note since Cream.

My second choice would be Clapton because he really did turn me onto the blues, but he's put out his fair share of not-so-badass music. His live stuff I've seen still rules though.

Is it fair to compare guitarists? I reckon so, but I have learned some Clapton, moved on to Hendrix and am noow trying some Vai. Next will be Paul Gilbert... I'll take Combo 7 please...

It's not a competition.. And no one is comparing the guitarists.. It's a poll asking who you prefer at this point in your life.. All those players are amazing.. PG is a master at speed and an amazing teacher.. Vai is just technical king.. Clapton is such a bluesy hero and jimi.. Well jimi will set it on fire and make it sound good!!

So why get upset that its not a competition? Just tell us who you are into at this point in your life!

I get you, but I couldn't choose between Vai and Hendrix any more than I could choose between Segovia and Ritchie Blackmore or De Lucia and Malcolm Young. They are just too different and I like them all, regardless of where I am in my life or my playing.

Sometimes I'm in the mood for technical stuff and then I'll listen to Zappa, Vai, Howe, McLaughlin, et. al.. Other times I want song-based stuff or stuff with more accessible melodies and then it'll be AC/DC, The Police, REM, Joe Jackson or any number of other artists.

Then there are the rare artists who combine the two extremes, outrageous playing and accessibility - Bumblefoot, Satch, Hendrix, etc. Unfortunately few and far between though. Come to think of it, some of my favourite Vai Stuff is when he's a sideman - Zappa, David Lee Roth, Alcatrazz, etc.

Yeah, i get what you saying Alan.. Like right now i'm listening to Eric Clapton.. But earlier i was listening to some Satch.. So i understand your dilemma.. I guess that's why there is more than one band out there! ?

People People, like I said, its just supposed to be for fun, I know that YOU CAN'T COMPARE ARTISTS AND SAY THAT ONE IS BETTER, PERIOD. It comes down to taste, this is for fun. I'm just asking who is you're favourite for whatever reason i.e. who do you listen to the most. None of them are better than the other it's a J-O-K-E thats for F-U-N.
