How to download youtube videos - a guide

Want to download any youtube video? Or any other flash based video (break.com etc etc)?

Here is how:

First, get RealPlayer here: (select free version)

http://www.real.com/realplayer

Install the program. Make sure you select "add browser download button"

Once installed, open the video you want to download in a new tab and wait for it to just start playing. Move your mouse pointer over the video and then click "download the video"

Or, as I prefer, right click and select the menu:

The videos are named according to whatever is displayed at the top of your browser:

A download box is opened. As soon as the video name appears here you can close the original window or tab it was downloaded from.

Remember to remove the completed videos:

The files are saved to My Documents/My Videos/RealPlayer Downloads
The videos are saved in .flv format. This can be played by realplayer, vlc and many other flash players.

My player of choice is media player classic home cinema. It plays almost everything you can get. VLC is similar and they are based on the same platform.

Alternatively, those With Firefox can use the DownloadHelper addon, which does the same and has the added benefit of using a queue that only downloads one at a time, starting the next in the queue as soon as the previous is finished downloading. Doesn't hog all your bandwidth that way.
