Firefox add-ons

Just installed Firefox for the first time. Loving it.

Having quite a blast sifting through the dozens of add-ons. Are there any that the FF users amongst you recommend / can't live without?

And, NB, is there any way of shrinking the toolbar???!!!! I've added a few,and already my toolbar is taking up a big whack of my screen ?

I just use the Yahoo toolbar, though my FF stopped working yesterday. I had to change my proxy adress (telkom cough...) and now only my Internet Explorer works.

At the company I work, Firefux is all they certify because they dont like Microsoft, you see. I'm pretty interested to watch this thread because I dont know what all the fuss is about. I know that they whack a whole bunch of updates into it each time I hop on the network but dont know what they are. I'd also like to know what FF offers me over IE which always works unlike aforementioned.

The one thing I immediately noticed, Ray, was speed. MUCH faster than IE.

I'll report on the gadgets once I've played a bit ?

Some add ons I use:

Adblock Plus - Stop web sites displaying images
NoScript - Stops web sites running scripts (very scary too see what goes on in the background)
UnMHT - Save web pages as a single consolidated MHT file
Xmarks - Synchronise bookmarks between multiple instances of Firefox
DownThemAll - Download accelerator

I use the CustomizeGoogle tool which does all kinds of anonymising and also makes things a little smoother when using Gmail or Google groups.

And, NB, is there any way of shrinking the toolbar???!!!! I've added a few,and already my toolbar is taking up a big whack of my screen ?

There are problems with IE - mostly around security. These are well documented and could be exploited.

Not that FireFox doesn't have it's problems, but they seem to have been less serious than with IE (so far) and because Mozilla/Firefox has a smaller user base the browser is less attractive to malicious varmints.

Another good App is Foxit as a replacement for Adobe reader. Much smaller application and MUCH FASTER than Adobe. Also very stable

Have a look at delicious.

It is an amazing online bookmark (favourite) account. You create a profile and save all your bookmarks (with tag words for easy searching) to the online profile. A toolbar add-on (that collapses when you dont use it) is integrated into FF. You can access any of your bookmarks at any PC and browse the most popular bookmarks at:

I cannot live without this, I have almost 1700 bookmarks

I used to use foxit but got tired of all the bloated nonsense. I hate the ad stuff.

There is also a portable version you can run from a flash stick

Adblock Plus - to remove ads from webpages.
Download helper - To queue and download Youtube and other embedded media files.
Then a few specialised search engines for the search bar.

FF is much faster, much more stable and safer than IE.
