Basic, inexpensive way of recording

I use have Audacity, what I need to make a decent quality recording. I've till recently plugged my distortion pedal (pre amp with an emulated speaker output) straight into my mic input and it worked up to a point. I want to record my amp as well though. I have a Randall RG50TC. I bought a ComputerMusic Magazine a while back with some demos and free software. So what I basicly want to know from you guys is the following: What software is decent (free software) which I can download plugins and additional effects for? How can I record my amp as well? (Without spending a fortune on microphones) Can I download backtracks, drum samples, bass samples, keyboard samples etc from the net? Thanks in advance you guys.

Did you do a quick google search for 'freeware/shareware VST plugins'? theres quite a few nice one.. That how I got my hands on Pluggo's freeware stuff (RTAZ plugins as well so they worked on ProTools)

I've downloaded Pluggo, but my computer can't recognise the file type. It is a file format for PC aparantly. I can't open it, tried the find the appropriate program link with no success. Anyone can help?

EDIT: It was an OSX installer and got the right one just now. Will se whether I can figure out how to use it.
