Tab is imperfect. It doesn't have a standard way of describing the duration of notes relative to each other.
Sloppily written ASCII tab that omits duration flags is imperfect. Guitar tabulator when properly construed is a far more accurate and legible record of the performance for fretted instruments. Historically Lute and guitar was written in tablature. The "great minds" of the Victorian area imposed dots (standard notation) on all instruments including lute and guitar.
I spent my first 2 decades learning classical guitar pieces written in standard notation. Today I will refuse to even look at a piece of guitar music written in code (standard notation) In the same breath I will say that one cannot fully grasp classical or contempory music theory without at least an elementary grasp of standard notation.
