Well I actually mean Breedlove, not Breadloaf haha, although that is what I call them :roflmao:
How do these compare to everything else when shopping for guitars in the R7'000-R15'000 price range?
I played on a few at Music Connection, but they were more entry level models I believe by looking at the inlays and binding (or lack thereof), they just arrived and didn't have prices on yet.
The ones I played sounded very good, especially the grand auditorium, but they were very bright, perhaps due to the strings.
I got the general feel that they are very similar to Takamine with a huge emphasis on workmanship but not as much character as the older more established American brands, or am I wrong?
Would you buy one over a Takamine, Martin or Taylor in this price range?
These things are subjective. This kind of beauty is at least partly in the eye of the beholder.
For me Taylors being made these days are not good and not worth the money. Also, and again for me, Larrivees sound way better than a Martin with the same sticker price and represent better value for money.
I have played far more expensive instruments with bigger price tags and wondered what all the fuss was about. I'm not that wild about Santa Cruz for example (at least the two that I have played) but there are people who are richer, more famous and far more talented than I am who think those are very fine instruments indeed.
So I think you have to answer this question for yourself. Check out the shops, see what's available for what you can afford, and then decide on what YOU like - or that you want to wait a little longer.
I'll give my usual advice: include good, well cared for second-hand instruments in the equation as well.
PS: From what I've seen of Breedlove you could do a LOT worse for the same price.
