Peavey 6505+ vs. Krank Krankenstein vs. Mesa dual / triple rectifier

Note that these are my favorite heads.

I have only played on the Mesa Dual for about 5 minutes once.
I would like to know what your experiences with these amps were.

I understand that cab selection would be important, but let’s compare these head to head ? for metal use.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you probably put a pedal in front of the head for metal use.

Peavey hands down.
I own it and its the best amp i have every played.
Played a gig with a guy with a Dual Rec, we played at the same time and my amp just blew his away.
oh and we were playing metal, cause thats basically all i play.

For cabs, i run mine through a mesa stiletto 2x12.
I would have liked a mesa rec 2x12 but marshall didnt stock them and the new shipment was too expensive for me.

As for the other 2, i havent played a the krank, but have the Rec
i think they overpriced ??? ? ?

Jip, I heard that the Peavey sounds great with the Mesa XXX cab.
Waiting for Dean to pitch in on this one, he has a Krank ?

So do you play only the peavey or do you use a pedal as well?

i play straight through the peavey no pedals required for my sound.
Its a really crunchy sound with some really nice mids.

I have a Peavey 5150 MKI (same as the 6505) in the studio here too and prefer it for modern day metal high gain tone. Just because it's tighter and crunchier. It has a farty clean channel though making it almost unusable.

The Krank rev 1 (better than the Krankenstein imo) sounds chunkier and has a tendancy to get boomy if you can't control the guitar very well. But I love the 'chunk' when you palm mute.
Jens Bognren (producer of Opeth and Katatonia) said he's gotten the Krank to sound like a Dual Rec.

I still haven't had the pleasure of trying out a Dual Rec. AFAIK Marshall Music won't let you look in the direction of the amp unless there's a salesman standing between you and it. (not literally of course)
Which is the dumbest thing I've ever heard because besides buying things, the point of local music stores (for me at least) is to try out the gear.
But I hear good things from it and some of my favorite tones have come from the Dual Rec.

At the moment (and strictly my opinion), and I think for a while to come. The Marshall JVM 410H is THE best amp for any style.
The OD channels don't even need a tube screamer. I've played on it with my custom which tends to be heavy in the bottom end if you don't control it, and a Ibanez basswood 7 string with EMGs.

Then the peavey JSX (head) second.

In order ? I'd put them as:
1. JVM
2. JSX
4. Krank (if you know how to use it, it goes before the 5150)
3. 5150
4. Dual rec (because I haven't tried it)

Actually if I could assume the tones on everything I'd have put the Krank last.
For the style of music I'll be playing in future I'm debating with myself if I'll use a Tube screamer because I need extra low gain while still sounding tight and chunky.

Ive heard the krankenstein in music connection and it sounded killer! i played on the dual rectifier and i was not overly impressed. Im not the greatest guitarist out there but there was something "off". Maybe you must just crank it, no pun intended or it something was wrong with it, for metal the peavey or krank will be better, forget about cleans on the peavey tho ...

abit of an old topic BUT i own a 6505+ and its KILLER HOT! as Dean mentioned clean channel sux BUT who buys this amp for cleans? and lets be honest when you playing metal you dont really want a clean sound ? (im sure thats going to make some people upset but its just a joke)

I used the 6505+ and the dual rec on the EXACT same cab AB'd and i wasnt impressed with dual rec..maybe it just needs ALOT more tweaking than the 6505+ to get it in that sweetspot.I dont only play metal and hardcore now so i wouldnt mind checking out the dual rec now as its more flexible BUT the point of this post 6505+ guaranteed to make you happy :-[

What I've also realised is that with amp heads you can't expect to plug in, and out comes this amazing sound you've been hearing on your favorite albums. Especially amps that are very versatile.

It's like getting in a new car and expecting to know how it handles and pulls away etc.

When I first got my Krank I was disgusted with the sound of it. I was probably close to tears because It didn't sound good at all and I thought I wasted so much time and money for an amp I couldn't get to sound 'good'.
It takes getting used to the controls and what they actually do to the amp with the type of guitar you put into it.
That's why I would need several hours with an amp with a few breaks to actually "get it". (Which is also why I think Marshall Music suffers in that department. Not allowing people to play the Mesa's unless they're buying.
That's still the dumbest thing I've ever heard a store do and refuse to shop there unless I'm desperate)

Sometimes you can be lucky and the amp is everything you hoped for when you plugged in for the first time. Like the 6505 which pretty much only does one thing and does it well!

I love the Krank and it's limited versatility...But I'd still swap for a JVM 410H though ?

That is well said Dean. i think that sums up everything ? Funny the MESA scenario...not been able to play them..thats super lame! hence they will sit on the showroom floor for years...

Since we are on topic, have any of you guys had the opertunity to play on a Bogner? I've listened to clips of the Uberschall and was blown away.

I personally have not BUT im sure DEAN has ? yeh checked them out on the net seem real hot amps.
My only thing with amps is (this is entirely my opinion so dont quote me) that ALOT of tone comes from the PLAYER.Everyone also has a tendancy to EQ an amp their way...so having said that plug me and you for example into the same amp and i could make it sound terrible and it could sounds amazing in your hands.

The peavey 6505+ is a NON FIDDLY amp in my opinion and its pretty much the only plug and play amp i have heard. BUT if you do fiddle you can really get that sweet spot and then its ultra awsome.

* PLease im not trying to punt peavey in anyway i just own one and so i can give my opinion on it. I personally like so many amps and in an ideal world would have like 5 different heads.

I am NOT an out and out metal-head, but my cousin is in an all original metal band, and i do like to go completely ape-sh!tt every now and again.
In fact, i too are looking into a hi-gain amp right now, and seeing that sone of my fav bands are using a Tele into a Mesa Dual Recto ("UNSANE"), i am deff leaning towards the Dual Recto.

I have to say, the Mark5 Boogie impressed me BIG TIME too.
Never played one, but was in the US a while agao, and i heard a store owner doing a great 30min demo !!!

It also depends on what type of metal tone you are after !
The new Peavey 6505 1X12 combo just cm eout, and it is CHEAPER than a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe !!!!!!!!

I also heard that Krank is bringing out a hot rodded version of the allmighty Krankenstein soon.

But my 1st choice, thus far will go to the Mesa DR, as i love this ton emy Canadian buddy gets out of it :

PS : do not out-rule the Mesa Mark5 . . . that thing impressed the hell out of me !

I saw a guitar store OWNER demo'ing it for the better part of 30-40min's and i walked away stunned.
It also helped that he turned it UP, i mean wayyy up.
Unlike some local guitarstores that look at you as if you are the anti-christ about to rape his 16yo virgin daughter (when you want to strech an amp's legs when YOU test it) - wellcome to SA !!!
