DADGAD and other tunings

I have been dabbling with DADGAD for awhile and it opens up a whole new door of creativity and even song writing.
I see they call it Modal Tuning which is neither major nor minor.(I will have to study theory a bit more to get my head around that).

Feeling bored with standard tuning, have a go, you never know.

Anyone else dabbling in alternate tunings?

Yup I use Open G (DGDGBD) for slide playing, my Tele is constantly in that tuning and I love it ?

I've been tuning down to B F# B E G# C#. It's ultra heavy, so you need extra thick strings to get decent tone out of it. I've been using ernie ball not even slinky's which seem to work.

yeah i often use a drop D tuning ...

also for a rather fast country/hillbilly type song i wrote in key of G I tune D G D G B E which allows me to pick a root /5th country bass line on bass strings in open notes freeing my fingers to solo ......

I'm a big fan if DADGAD, and there are plenty of songs to learn with it too.

A definite favourite tuning.

I have the Squier in regular E tuning, the RG in dropped D + all the strings down half step, the classical in normal E (naturally) and the dreddy in C# modal. No point in having four guitars in the same tune, eh?

Yeah, although I'm mostly on standard I do use alternate tunings pretty often. The ones I usually use are Drop-D and DADGAD. And also Baritone (4-5 steps down) and Nashville (higher strings of a 12-string set) tuning in the studio sometimes.

Sadly, these days Drop-D seems to have develped a sort of "bad player" type stigma. It's true that almost anyone can play a heavy riff in Drop-D with minimal knowledge of music or playing skill, but I cut my teeth on a lot of old blues, where Drop-D is great for broody, hypnotic type riffs - very voodoo ?. It's also great for slide playing. So when I'm playing in Drop-D I try to push myself to think as far outside of the box as I can.
