I started this on a previous post (prog rock guitarists) which kind of ended up more on who qualifies as a prog rock guitarist or not.
Which guitarists are inspiring but have not had much mention on this forum. What guitarists can you recommend?
Any type of Genre
Who can remember Micheal Lee Firkins, I had his debut self titled album, what a good player
Scott Henderson great jazz player
Dann Huff - great session player, brilliant tone, look out for him
Brent Mason - country boy who can jazz a little , also great session player
Michael Landau - Session supremo
Micheal Schenker - Metal guitarist, been in the Scorpions, UFO and his own band
Phill Keaggy - Christian guitarist who should be more well known
Narciso Yepes - the very first classical guitarist that I ever heard. Check out his version of Danza, that John Williams popularized on the first SKY album
Christopher Parkening - anothe Classical monster
WHO ELSE CAN YOU SUGGEST?

An absolutely brilliant jazz guitarist goes by the name of Kenny Burrell. Truly awesome.

+1 on that. Lovely player.
If we go down that path we should also consider Barney Kessel.

...and Tal Farlow and Lenny Breau.

I full agree with Phil Keaggy! The guy is phenomenal! :applause:
What about Ben Kasica, he is the guitarist from a Christian band called Skillet

Caleb Quaye. I have always admired style. Has worked as a session player with many artists.
I first discovered his playing on "Madman across the Water", which I consider Elton John's best ever album, before he went "Crocodlie Rocking!!!", and singing for, and I quote Keef: "Singing
for dead princesses!"....did'nt think the song was so bad myself! ?
Davey Johnstone.....as above.
David Sancious, primarily a keyboard player, also an awesome guitarist!!!

Do ukulele players count? If they do, Jake Shimabukuro is an absolute god!

Kris Norris, formely of Darkest Hour is imo the most underrated metal guitarist that ever lived. He writes the most crazy solo's.

Martin Barre of Jethro Tull is overlooked as a player I think. He's very good, and has improved his craft considerably over the years. Which is not to say that he was a bad player initially. He has a couple of solo albums out. Not my bag, but I can't deny his chops.
Bruce Cockburn. I know that Big M is a fan of his. I think he enjoys a good reputation in certain acoustic guitar circles, but I still think he's generally overlooked when people come to talking about guitar players.
Peter Green. When people start talking about the players that came out of the UK in the 60s they talk about Clapton and Beck and Page, probably get in Gilmour, may get on to Gallagher (well... not from the UK, but from that scene). What about Peter Green though? A lovely, soulful player and, for my money, the best of the British Blue Booms players.

One guy who should be mentioned is a fellow South African - Danny Bridgens. Great Tone, Great Time and Great Taste. Last I heard he was a in the states. His stuff with Friends First was wonderful. His session playing is great too, even though he's never achieved the notariety of Mauritz Lotz. Players in the states who aren't mentioned enough for me are Robben Ford, Sonny Landreth and Carl Verhyn.

Some Unsung Heroes
1) Ollie Halsall (Patto & Tempest) Incredible English guitarist from the early 70's, who played in a jazzy legato style with a great rock tone.
2) Eef Albers (Dutch Fusion Guitarist)
3) John Etheridge (Darryl Way's Wolf, Soft Machine, Stephane Grappeli)
4) John Goodsall (Brand X)
5) Ray Gomez (Stanley Clarke Band)
6) David Sancious (Primarily a keyboard player, but an awesome guitarist - imagine a hybrid of Hendrix & McLaughlin).
7) Caleb Quaye (Elton John & Hookfoot)
8) Christian Escoude (French Jazz/Gypsy Swing Guitarist)
9) Carl Bowry (Plays with The Muffin Men - Zappa Tribute Band)
10) Alex McHacek (Hybrid of Zappa & Holdsworth)
Check them out!!

Oooh - some interesting ones in there.
10) Alex McHacek (Hybrid of Zappa & Holdsworth)
Now that I have to hear!
4) John Goodsall (Brand X)
Good guitarist, but doen't do anything for me. He always seems to be noodling like a Jazz alto sax player. The star of Brand X is for me Percy Jones - Jaco without the booze influenced wildness.
7) Caleb Quaye (Elton John & Hookfoot)
? He's been around here lately and posted once or twice. He's here visiting one of our other members.

I agree. Sonny Landreth is definitely not mentioned enough.
Arno-West
Andy Powell - Wishbone Ash
Buckethead - just listen to his albun "Colma" and you'll understand.
Angus doesn't get enough recognition either.
