I knew he was a member of the Beach Boys back in the day, but didn't know he toured with the Stones. I think he joined the Beach Boys along with another South African - Ricky Fataar, if memory serves. I think they were both in The Flames before that.
I remember reading somewhere that he toured with The Band as well.
Quite a pedigree. ?
Spot on Riaan. I played with the band that opened for the Flames on their "Reunion/Farewell Tour" of SA and the then Rhodesia before they finally split. So we spent about month with them.
That was shortly after Blondie and Ricky split from the Beach Boys. Blondie went on to play with Rick Danko, and "The Band" and a few others. Then he met Keef, (probably over a joint ?) they jammed, and he was invited to join the Stones's backing group. Still tours with them, but is based in LA.
Ricky now plays drums (one of the best drummers to come out of SA, IMO) for Bonnie Raitt. Ricky, btw. is also an awesome guitarist, but never played guitar on any recordings, except
he played the SITAR on one of the Flames' albums, "If you think you're groovy". His drumming on this track is quite phenomenal, considering he was only 13 years old!!!!!!
Blondie and Keef....Stones Concert.
