I'm using a vox ac30 and ad50vt(to get some cleaner sound). through a boss me50 my epiphone fying v is getting some nice rich tone, but my epiphone les paul gothic(Floyd rose version) sounds very muffled and softer. I want to change over to analog, starting with a proco rat, boss dual OD and Original Crybaby, but still using the ME50 for its delay, compression and splitting my signal into both amps.
I've always been wanting to slot a EMG81-85 combo into the gothic guitar, but is wondering if it would be the best option since I play more rock/grunge(hillsong united/foo fighters) and not as much metal where the EMG's seems to shine?
Epiphone V + Gothic LP >CryBaby>Proco RAT>BOSS Dual OD>MT2>ME50>AC30+AD50VT

Knopfler plays EMG and he's not into metal. So do Lukather and Gilmour and they don't head bang either. I should add these people do have a tendency to switch to their SA pups.
The 81 is too in-your-face for grunge imho, let alone Hillsong. You might consider putting an 89 in the bridge, which gives you an SA and an 85 (well, almost) in one pup. They also have a 60 and even a 60A for rounder tone than your ubiquitous 85 in the neck, but they didn't stock those locally last time I checked. You can compare audio samples on www.emginc.com

Also, if your AC30 has an effects loop then rather try your ME50 through that so that it doesn't add an extra tone sucking stage between your guitar and amp.
Also, I personally prefer my wah AFTER my overdrive/distortion but that may be personal taste.
Rather go try out some Dimarzios or Seymour Duncan passive pickups. WAY better quality than EMG IMHO ?

the ac30 is a 70's model....no effects loop on that beast. i run my crybaby before my OD's, but has my ME50's wah at the back.
what does the prices of the Dimarzios or Seymour Duncan look like compared to emg's?

I'm not too sure on the prices but give Marshall Music a call. I know the guys there personally and they've just recently got the dealership for Dimarzio. They really know what they're talking about and will easily help you select which one will suit your sound.
It's been a while since I've looked at pickup prices but I do know that Seymour Duncans were roughly the same price as EMGs back in the day.

i have changed my mind and really think i'm rather gonna go for the Dimarzios or Seymour Duncan. Is there any model wich would suit a rock/grunge style better?

If you are interested I am thinking bout selling my Proco rat. Send ma a PM

I found the 81 to sound too harsh and is more for the guitarist who's too lazy to pick properly.
85 in the bridge with an 18v mod should be fine for rock. just the turn gain down ?
