With the really extreme weather patterns we've had here in Jo'burg over the last view weeks, I suppose this is not totally out of line to start to make songs about the winter.

I can easily see this as part of a movie or game scene, some really nice tones and ideas in there.

I can not really say I have one fixed way of creating backing tracks. It really changes all the time.

I created this backing track with a combination of EWQL Symphony Orchestra, a bit of Project Sam Truestrike and Garritan's Personal Orchestra. There are also some extra ambient guitar tracks in the background.

This track was created sort of as I gone along. I just played some guitar parts over a basic chord structure first and then went back to orchetrate the background. As I orchestrate, I often add bars or remove bars, cut out parts I did not like and add extra parts.

Sorry, I'm only getting a chance to comment now. Thanks for sharing. Very nice. I like the orchestral backing - almost Floyd at times (cross Comfortably Numb and Shine on, maybe a bit of Echoes). The Wah guitar is a bit too aggressive for me though - it feels a bit jarring, both tonally and the occasional note choice. Some good touches with the orchestral percussion - something I don't ever use myself (for some reason).

EWQL Symphony Orchestra - I don't know this one. Is that like a scaled down Vienna Symphonic Library? I use VSL for strings, but it's a bit huge and unwieldy for just some quick orchestration - I've been using the Edirol Orchestral Softsynth for that.

Thanks for the kind comments. EWQL SO is a much smaler library than Vienna. It is pretty good for my purpose. EWQL is also far too big to use for composing. I only have a 1GB memory, so I would do most composing with Garritan's and then replace all the parts one-by-one with EWQL when I do the final rendering.

I never used Edirol Orchestra, but have heard many good reviews.

I love Pink Floyd and must admit that Gilmour had a profound influence on my playing, but I would not place myself in that class - even remotely. I can just wish.

I have 2GB mem, but have to do the same thing. It seems to be more a processor thing (I have a humble 3GHz Northwood core P4) when you get multiple samples going in Kontakt. Painful trying to mix, as I have to freeze the synth to audition each change, then unfreeze to make another change, then freeze to audition...

I never used Edirol Orchestra, but have heard many good reviews.

It is nice. Still, when you get good samples in to replace it and spend the time tweaking, it makes a big difference to the end result.
