Players who grate...

A bit of a reverse on most of the topics in this section... I was wondering if you guys had pet peeves - guitarists who really irk you for having either garnered a lot of (you think) unwarranted attention, or whose styles or playing just set you on edge? I don't want to start a fight where people bag each other's heroes...but I think it'd be interesting to hear what people DON'T like in a player. For me, though I can appreciate showy stuff for its technical merit, I'm not big on people who don't play for the song. I find it hard to imagine pulling together a band whose sole purpose is to back me up while I stand there and wank tediously. Because I wouldn't want to be one of those other musicians. Partly for this reason, I find Carlos Santana incredibly annoying. So, who gets under your skin?

More genre's of "music"...Dance(house,trance), Hip Hop and black/death metal.. ?

well music and guitar playing is an art form ....... and i like to believe that art cannot be judged on merit or by comparison but it is the viewers/listeners choice that if the "art" does not touch them in some way to move swiftly on ...so to speak....

but what grates me is when i see lists of top 10 guitarists/bassists ect ect ... by whose opinion...

the only listings that are true is when sales are reflected.... and then mostly it's pop and then the guitar is not even played live.... but sampled and tweaked and dropped in when needed ....

i rejoice in the fact that we can all listen to diverse music .... imagine if we all had similar taste....

The problem with that is that most people don't want art for itself. They want art, and music suffers the most in this regard I think, to be a background to their lives. A lot of people who go to gigs want nostalgia or a backdrop for their own celebration of whatever it is (football team won, got my leg over, SA won the world cup, me and my mates are onto our 6th pint and having a rare old time, etc etc). Or they just want to say that they were at some fashionable and/or cool place and saw some currently hot and/or hugely famous person on stage. The actual music might not get much of a listening to.

You make a good point, Bob - I agree music suffers more than other art forms in this respect (probably because of its easy accessibility both from a listening and playing point of view, and its ubuiqity and ease of "transport" all over the place); moreover, an attendant problem with the "people are right" view is that you end up with such market-chasing "musicians", with a highly cynical approach to making music. Other art forms suffer much less from that. (Well, perhaps Hollywood cinema...)

You shouldn't pay too much attention to me. When I was in my teens I'd go to clubs and actually pay attention to the guitar solos or the bass line or what the drummer was doing. All my mates got lucky with a girl and/or drank so much that they threw up on the pavement and woke up the next morning not knowing how they got home.

It depends on your priorities ?

I believe "innovative" + "marketing" = "influencial" all the time
On the other side "innovative" + "workinghard" = "influencial" by stroke of luck

It makes me sick. And all their widdly widdly guitarist with their poses and pathetic attempts to play solos.
This is my pet hate. Copycat musicians. Funnily enough there always enough idiots in the world to buy the same thing over and over, as long as its currently 'cool' to do so. Where is my Magnum?

Well, not to mention band names, but if you are talking about the local bands with the acrobatics (done like 30 years ago elsewhere) and always looking so pissed off and depressed, then I'm with you. I dunno what metalcore is. Norwegian hardocre? Rollmops? Dont like any of it!

I use to think Gary Moore was awright (just awright) until I read what he said about Joe Bonamassa. Now his music sommer sounds blind. Ja , he grates me.

Also hating John Mayer for his attitude at the moment. His playing is superb though.
