I'm in BIG TROUBLE

Hi All You are all a very bad influence on me. ? ? ? ? Since joining this forum, I have had the chance to interact with some cool dudes (and a few wacky ones) The guitar bug is starting to hit me hard. I have not seriously tried to play any instrument my whole life, having come from a very non musical family. My wife however is a professional musician, vocalist and music teacher. She picked up electric guitar in January this year and is now playing on stage at our church. My son plays Drums, Bass, Guitar, Piano and sings (He's 15). He was also part of the Drakensberg Boys Choir at one stage and had a chance to tour the USA. I am now 47 and have GAS and a desire to learn to play. Is there any hope for me...!!!! 8)

You are never too old... Your biggest problems will be trying not too spend money you don't have on things you don't need!

Ditto... and the 'real' thing aint cheap.
It seems though you have the means available to you, so there's nothing to lose.

One problem you may have is performance anxiety. The "helpfull advice" I get from the more experienced musicians in my life tends to turn me into a jibbering idiot with five thumbs. Every thing I have learned and practiced goes out of the window. I lock the door and play with ear phones.

You are never too old... Your biggest problems will be trying not too spend money you don't have on things you don't need!

+1 on that. I already have that problem with my wife and son.
Our lounge looks like a music store demo room...and wait till the friends come over....luckily some of our neighbors are deaf....

Why don't you go for an Epiphone Les Paul. Every now then you can pick them up for relatively cheap on Gumtree.

I am not in a position to buy right now, but I will keep my eyes peeled for a bargain.

Another guitar I was looking at was the Ibanez SA260FM.
Combination: Humbucker on the bridge and two single coils middle and neck. Seems versatile.

Also well priced at about R5000.00ish and has good reviews on HC.

Played the SA that Wantzchaz sold, lovely instrument. I didn't have a great amp to put it through but it felt great.

Your original budget was for R5000. If I were you I'd stick with that budget, and get the "best" I can for R5000. I would not "down-scale" to R2600, and get
a "make-do" guitar, purely because it looks nice or its cheaper.........IMO.....!!!!

The retail on the two guitars is almost identical. The ARC300 is now discontinued by Ibanez and Toms have stock that they obviously want to get rid of. I actually looked at this guitar before looking at the SA260 so in my books either are good to me. It's just not as versatile as the HSS combo of the SA.

The ARC300 is no longer on the Ibanez Website as it is discontinued.
The specs are similar to the AR250 but with Chrome fittings and a more LP type shape. The ART300 is also similar except that the ART has Lo-Z active PUP's.
