Strip down to bare wood. The sealer/grain fillers used in mass production are thick, heavy and usually yellowish and quite cloudy. Even when a clear is used, they don't penetrate the wood, so you do not get the same good looking wood finish you do with a decent sealer - it'll be quite pale. There are many more reasons, but those are the main ones.
