Hi everybody,
This is a 1 minute 30 second clip that was recorded while jamming at Gareth's place. Check out his kick-ass funky bass lines in this clip, which i like to call "Explosion in Am7". Gareth, if you ever wanna change the title, lemme know...and by the way, thanks for having me over. It was an absolute orgasm playing through the Boss Gt Pro.

Awesome recording ?
I almost feel like I never wanna put something here that I've recorded ?
[me=Norio]goes to hide somewhere[/me]
Gareth
Arjun, it was a pleasure to jam with you, and I can live with that title .
Norio come outta there, it's mostly owing to the pre-amp that the tone is recorded nicely ....and of course Arjuns' shredding ? he is teaching a bit ATM so there's an opportunity to be inspired if you're in Cape Town.
Riaan
Hey you guys...awesome tune and great lead! Bass is really good also. I'm yet again considering selling all my guitars and take up gholf instead ?

[me=Norio]goes to play Golf with Riaan ?[/me]
It's such tasteful shredding and sexy tone! Can't wait to get there!

Hey u guys..thank you for the compliments. Really appreciate it. It really is thanks to the pre-amp, the Boss GT Pro and Gareth's recording (and bass playing ;D) capabilities that the tone came out so super-cool. Playing over at Gareth's place was seriously awesome and i thought i might be able to record a work out in Am7 for one of my students who is breaking out of his shell...and as coincidence would have it, Gareth and i had jammed on a simple Am7 and D progression earlier that afternoon. Well, one thing i have to admit is that 50 seconds into the track, i sorta blanked out for a few seconds..he he ;D
Special thanks to Norio for his compliment on the tasteful shredding and sexy tone..u've made my day bro..When u get down here, the drinks are on me..he he
As for the playing, it was just a couple of licks based on the G Major (Ionian) , the Am Pentatonic and the Dorian of G, however, the patterns i used aren't exactly conventional ones. Thinking of it now, i know i could have done a lot more with it musically by actually doing a full blown workout in all the modes of G major and maybe some harmonies based on C (3rd of Am), D (4th) and E (5th)...Hey Norio, maybe you could give it a shot and put some stuff up...its pretty simple once you get your mind around it.
Last but by no means the least, Gareth's bass playing was really really awesome ?
sepheritoh
Arjun that's some really nice shredding. Please let us hear some more!
arjunmenon
Hey sepheritoh,
Thank you so much. It really means a lot to me. As for posting more material, hopefully when Gareth and i meet up next week, we'll have some pretty decent stuff for you guys to listen and comment on. So, as the saying goes, watch this space.. ;D
Cheers

I'm still at the stage where I use pretty much one scale over a whole song ?
Nothing wrong with that, of course, but I'm aiming to one day play like Marty and just follow the chords.
Man, Meir (Satriani) lent me a video of Friedman talking about following chords and that man has some serious skill, taste, feel, etc, etc, etc!
As much as I love metal, it's a shame how much gets lost in there!
Garth-S
Wow..! I think I'm going to sell all my guitar stuff now. Absolutely awesome soloing Arjun!
Gray
Wow dude sweet stuff. It has such a laid back open road kinda feel to it, wish i could lay down a track like that. :-\
arjunmenon
Hey Norio,
I agree with what you said about improvising on one scale over the whole song. However, in my opinion, to make your solo count under that circumstance, you really need to choose your notes and have exceptional phrasing abilities. As for me, i feel that knowing more than one way of playing something and including other scales beefs up my playing. Its like a language..if you know a couple of words (in this case, a few scales) you will be able to communicate, but knowing a lot more words gives more definition to the idea being communicated. So, practise, practise, practise... ? And i've got the same Friedman video, and if i'm not mistaken its called "Melodic Control". It flippin rocks !! By the way, i hope you've given those modal cheat sheets some attention. Trust me, that stuff will beef up your playing like crazy.Speakin of which, i'm in the process of tabbing the solo, so if you wanna give it a shot..lemme know and i'll send it to you along with a detailed description on the scales used etc etc. As for the gear, i almost feel like a bum mentioning this ?, i went over to Gareth's place with just my Ibanez S520. Gareth had everything hooked up and ready to go. If you want info on what software we used etc etc, you need to speak to Gareth.
Gray, Garth...seriously, you guys...thank you so much for the compliments. Really appreciate it. It was something that just happened and it wasn't rehearsed etc...so maybe you guys should just record a backing track and burn up the fretboard...your way. I look forward to listening to your stuff.
Cheers,
Arjun
NorioDS
Hey Arjun,
I would LOVE to have that tab plus detailed info. I think everyone would appreciate it if you could post it here. Would that be OK with you?
arjunmenon
Hey Norio,
Sure, no problemo. Just give me a few days to pen it properly and write the summary. Where should i post it?
Cheers,
Arjun

Maybe under the Lessons section?

" Marty Friendman - Melodic Control " is An Awesome VID
he takes a simple progression like E, A , D (and creates the most intense & beautiful solo you could imagine on top of it)
he shows how you express each Chord to its full, because they are so cliche and "boring" chords by themselves, you basically exaggerate their differences through cool scales, modes, and marty's favourite "arpeggios" ?
The guy has some really good tips along the way...
"Many people see how many notes they can play, but if you hit just 1 note at the right time, people will think your a Genius......."
Another great piece of guitar instuctional "Riche Kotzen - Rock Chops"
Great section on legato....
