Guitar Pro as a practice aid..

I like to sit at my pc jamming to tabs on guitar pro, however I have a problem in that whenever I plug my guitar into my toneport and open up GP to start jamming with my speakers plugged into the toneport I no longer get any sound. Within the GP preferences I set the toneport as the sound driver but still I get nothing. The amp sim produces sound as per normal but I just can't get GP to play through my toneport.

Any ideas as to how I can fix this??

Have you tried looking under Options>Midi setup> go under device and choose "Toneport Midi out" and see if it works.

yip i tried that, but no luck I'm afraid. I've been fiddling with settings for ages and nothing works

I don't know the Toneport at all, but I'd guess it was a setting or limitation there. Are you using an ASIO driver? IIRC, ASIO only allows one piece of software to access it at once.

I think the problem is that Guitar Pro uses MIDI. On default General MIDI (GM). In Midi Setup you'd have to change it back GM, because I don't think the Tone port has a midi processor does it? Just a midi in and out, so you'd have to connect an external sampler.

I'm really not too clued up on the toneport as I've only messed with it, but shouldn't the tone port work as your PC's main output anyway? So you should get both the General MIDI and Amp Farm coming through regardless?

The toneport has an ASIO driver on it, and I also have installed an ASIO4All driver, whatever that may be.

My toneport doesn't have a midi processor as far as i can tell ??? i dont know if the other models of toneport do, but i've got the GX, the baby of the toneport series. I have a 5.1 surround system on my pc so when i'm using the toneport i just plug in my two side speakers into the toneport while leaving the center and rear speakers in the back of my pc. I do get sound from both the amps sims and GP when i plug in my center or rear speakers into the main side speakers jack in my pc while still having the actual side speakers plugged into the toneport, but it was really crackly, it wasn't sounding right at all so i abandoned that idea.

I think Dean's on the right track there. Try setting Guitar pro to use your operating system's software synth for MIDI out. Then set the default audio playback device for your PC to be the Toneport.

I tried that, still nothing.. I guess I'l have to give up on this for the time being. Thanks for the help though ?

There is no giving up involved here, just keep trying.
The truth is out there........

I once spent 2 months with a soundcard problem, but eventually solved the problem.

Haha ok i won't give up. But generally when I have these types of problems I'll give up on a solution, only to find that a few weeks or months down the line I'll figure it out (usually by mistake or pure chance). :-[

I use a Toneport UX-2 with GuitarPro in a similar setup and it works ok. I will check my setup tomorrow night (lesson tonight..) and let you know my settings, hopefully they will work for you as well.

Ok, just confirmed this now with Guitar Pro 5.2 running under Vista and using a Toneport UX2 as the output device.

In Guitar Pro, select "Options" -> "Audio Settings". At the bottom of the panel under "RSE Settings", set "Audio" to "ASIO Low Latency" and for "Sound Card" set "ASIO Toneport UX2". Make sure in the main UI you have RSE enabled and have RSE instruments selected for each instrument in the mix.

You can't use the (default) MIDI instrumentation for output as the device itself has to generate the tones in that case (rather than just playing back sounds) and the Toneport cannot do this.

I believe you need a licensed version of Guitar Pro to use RSE.

uuh :sorry: I turn off my RSE...In fact, I Prefer Guitar Pro 4 over GP 5 just being faster and easier to use and there's less flashy things on the screen.

Thanks for the guidance.. I used to have RSE but then as my version got older I started getting a message saying 'please update to view this file'. I was so over it (back then I only had 56k dial up so downloads bigger than like 3mb were out of the question) that I borrowed my friends version, not thinking whether it was licensed, i'm guessing its not since it didnt have RSE with it. So therein lies my problem, i shall try to remedy it ?

I also prefer using midi instead of RSE.. but GP5 is way better than GP4 imo. It looks nicer when you print files ?

I just downloaded and paid for GP6 ...i had a cracked version of gp4 and decided to do the right thing.

By gum i am blown away by the functionality of GP6 ,..am going to need to relearn the app.

From my experience with guys who use GP heavily, I find they dont have an ear, cant tell weather they are in and out of key, and you have to spoon feed them the songs. The only reason I used it was to tab songs for a guy who could not figure out 2 songs in 2 months. The kid could shred all the songs he had on tab, but ask him to compose a solo over my riff, he was lost for weeks, and the solo he eventually played was ripped from a 'Decapitated' song in the same key, literally copy paste.
