Life after modes ?

redant

Hi everyone

I am stuck. I have been with a guitar for many years, never professional though, but my lead seems to be limited. I got the modes early on, and based most of my play on that. And of course the odd blues scale or two. So what is next if I really want to do something funky and more advanced ? Something scaly and rocky etc. Is there a name for it ?

I await your inputs.

There was a similar thread a short while ago...

Go check it out...some of it might be helpful.

Thanks Dee. Gonna have a look at that now.

Something I do when I get stuck , is play any PowerChord (D5, E5, or F# 5)

and then find cool notes that fit with each chord. (Go up and down the fretboard and find notes that work on each string)

Don't follow any specific scale pattern. You can still go from the low E string to the high E string but

thats just for the sake of simplicity.

You can borrow notes from certain scales/ modes or even combine them.

Otherwise google some "exotic scales"

So you want scales?

your next step is to experiment with 'chord tones." and notes that are harmonies to the chord tones.... combined with scales and the modes of the different scale as each scale can have a mode built on each of the notes of that relavent scale.... try that if you already not there ....

alsos try some different approach's ... if your playing is getting staid or tired...like limiting the amount of notes you play.... eg do a whole solo on only 4 notes... it forces creativity in your timing/groove/harmony since don't forget you can play intervals too(2 notes at the same time) in other word force your brain out of the safe zone it's in.... the greatest example of an awesome solo which was on a hit record and was "out of the box" thinking was the solo in that old classic "walking on sunshine" which is almost entirely one note just an example that we needn't play predictable typical rock type solo's in every song ... sometimes one has to move away from the "more notes for your money" thinking....

anyway just experiment and above all make your playing fun...if it comes from the soul it can't be bad....\

peace and light

Michekls wrote You've got to read this new book called The Talent Code-- the introduction is about a girl who did a month's worth of practice in five minutes -- there's an excerpt here (The Talent Code)

It seems that all you do on this forum is punt that book. In fact I'm not even sure the wording changes from post to post.

Surely it wouldn't take even 5 minutes to add some variety to your own repertoire.
