2x12 or 4x10 cabs?

What is the difference in sound of a 2x12 or a 4x10 cab(or amp) in general?

Which would be better for classic clean sounds with slight breakup at times? ???

And for a driven sound? :-\

What is your personal opinion/experience?

It's more a general question I guess, not really anything specific. I want to know more about what the good and bad attributes are of each design.

1) lets say a 2x12 with celestions or a 4x10 with jensens
2) uh, I dunno. Lets say custom built
3) All low wattage things below 30 watts - blackstar HT-5, fender champ 600, vox AC etc...

4x12 has better efficiency (more volume at same power amp output level) but it generally comes in 4 ohm so your amp will need to be able to work with that. You can wire them for 16 ohm but that reduces the efficiency.
At the wattage you talk about, a 2x12 would easily be able to handle the power.

In general a 4x10 will be more accurate and have a tighter low end, while a 2x12 will have sweeter high end and a bigger, looser bass response. It's a moot point though as it really depends on the speakers in there and there are big differences between speakers, even different sizes in the same range.

Depends entirely on the speakers. Also depends on which classic clean - there are dozens of classics. Take an example of a sound you like, find out what was used and take it from there.

I recently changed from 2x12 and my Fender now has more
balls than the back end of a Buffalo!!!
