That's basically it - laminated is cheaper, they can use less wood and get the same strength and it also lets them use the better looking wood for a top and bottom veneer and stick the less attractive stuff in between for the middle laminae.
Oke that did the setup for me told me that solid wood sort of sets in and matures into better sound when the wood fibres or whatever start doing whatever they do when been played quite a bit.
That's the generally accepted theory.
It's also worth mentioning that there are laminates and there are laminates - one of the best guitars I've ever played was a laminated top DiGiorgio from Brazil.
