The amp, or rather amps I tried were a Fender Bassman, Twin Reverb and Hot Rod Deluxe which had been heavily modded and a custom made Dr. Z amp. The Dr. Z amp was out of this world! All the others were brilliant and juicy, but the Dr. Z was by far the ultimate.
I can understand that. A bit pricey though, depending on model. Most of Mike Zaite's amps (with the notable exception of the Carmen Ghia) are designed to be "in the ballpark" of the tones of other famous amps, so if you know which model it was, you can find out what type of tone it is that attracts you.
In terms of the jazz I'm interested in, I would say its the more blusier side of jazz, as well as bebop. Devout jazz players would call my jazz, "blues with complicated chords", rather than jazz itself.
Ah, well you're on your own path then - you'll upset the trad guys whatever you do, so it doesn't matter what you choose, as long as you like it yourself. ?
Your description of "blues with complicated chords" makes me think of players like Scott Henderson - that kind of thing?
