Ok this is what my setup is so far
HIWATT 100 MAXwatt (overdrive and reverb)
Fender Strat
Now I want to get pedals. What should I start with??
kayDUB
What kind of sound do you want?
list some bands/players or better yet, google your guitar heroes and find out what gear they play as a starting point.

What kind of sound do you want or what sort of effect do you want to achieve? Probably better to start with a sound and then go look for the pedal that will give you that.

Bit of a mix..
Matalica
ACDC
U2
Guns & Roses
Also some blues

Imo, the most neccessary pedals are; BOSS NS-2, BOSS TU-2(or Korg pitch black) and if you're into tons of gain, a boost pedal.
kayDUB
AC/DC tone is a Gibson SG straight into a Marshall... no pedals AFAIK.
If you into U2 a delay is a must, the Boss delay pedals are popular, DD-6, DD-7, DD-20.
and that's all I can say really, other than what I said already and go try some out! ?

Thanks guys... keep it coming.. Love learning all this new stuff

Chorus pedal

i Would definitely start with some drive pedals. It always gives u room dynamically and really forms the core of your sound (obviously driving an amp).
After that you can try the funky things like phaser, chorus, delay wah etc...

Compressor and a drive pedal to start ? IMO
Bob-Dubery
If you decide on a specific type of effect go out and test drive different examples. They do not all sound the same. EG Chorus pedals from different manufacturers will not all sound the same.
Take your time. Shop around. Ask questions. It's your money.

i would highly recommend for you stlye of music , a good OD like a ts808 / ts9 / sd-1 , a good distortion a ds-1 or ds-2 turbo . a good delay pedal dd-6 along those lines and maybe a chorus ch-1 and a compressor / sustain pedal - cs-3 maybe . and a wah pedal should you need it . that would get you close to many bands .

What is a CS-3 compression sustainer like.... Should I be looking for one of those?

What about multi-effects pedals??
I also have a HIWATT amp and it sounds amazing with my BOSS ME-50 multi-effects pedal. I wasn't sure what pedals I should get so I got them all... in one ?

Welcome to the world of wonder and choices! Distortion is a very personal taste thing.
I had a HiWatt Stack, the one thing that I never liked on the amp was the distortion / gain settings.
I ended up buying a Line 6 DM4, plugged the sucker into the HiWatt = Holly crap!
I have always been a big fan of the Boss Metal Zone. Give it a try!

I agree, get a multi-effects peadal, gives you time to play around with lots of options first. May not be all that great, but you'll get a good idea of what sounds you do and don't like.

An overdrive or distortion pedal should always be your first choice for blues or rock. The other effects are all just icing. Judging from your list of players, that's going to work best for you - you can set the amp up to give you a blues or rock crunch - that covers your blues, GnR and AC/DC stuff, then you can kick in the overdrive/distortion for leads and to take you into metal territory for the Metallica stuff. Try a few different ones out, preferably with your guitar and amp (or similar) and choose the one you like the sound of best.
The U2/Edge tones are the only effects heavy ones in your list. He uses a lot of effects, but AFAIC, the most important thing in getting a lot of his tones (after an overdrive or distortion) is a delay pedal.
I don't usually advise a multi effects pedal to start with. They give you everything you could want in one box, but they can be seriously confusing for the FX newbie and lead to bad habits.

Righto. My students ask this every year. And I remember asking my teacher the same thing.
What is your budget?
You probably have distortion sorted with that amp.
