Hi Guys,
need some here. New to the guitar world and was wondering if I should also buy a boss distortion pedal. My Hiwatt amp already has and overdrive/reverb channel..
What should I do?

You can never go wrong with a pedal..
The built in amp distortion/effects are good but IMHO cant match the flexibility you get from some good pedals..
If its the Boss DS-1..buy it!!
You can always pass it off as GAS!! ?

I'm with Lawrence on the DS-1, but have a listen first and decide which sounds good/better to you..

if your amp has a footswitchable overdrive channel that gives you the sound you want then it might not be worth it. all depends on what you are after though.
I would definately explore past the Boss range aswell, Proco Rat is also a well used pedal (Foo Fighters etc)
I had the Boss DS-1 which was supposedly used on Nirvanas Nevermind album and find it very mid scooped and goes from insanely shrill to not enough bass. suprisingly it was replace with a *kof*behringer*kof* UM100 ?

thanks guys. Yeah I runnign a HIWATT 100W maxwatt. It does have the overdrive channels and the sounds is good.
I have another question, I saw a boss acustic simularot pedal. What is that???
Explorerlover
That's, as far as I know, exactly what it says. It simulates acoustic tones to make your electric sound like an acoustic guitar.. I stand to be corrected on this...

i have the behringer version of the acoustic modeller and it actually works very well , it's no subsitute for a real accoustic guitar , but it sound very close and definetly a keeper in my ever growing arsenal of pedals ....

Two posts with HiWatt amps in one day ?
I had a HiWatt G200R stack, great amp, but bad distortion.
I played around with it for over a year and still did not find the distortion I wanted.
I like the Boss distortion pedals, also have a look at some multi-effects pedals.

Also have a look at the Digitech Bad Monkey. It is an overdrive and not a distortion (although it distorts beautifully). One nice thing about overdrive is that you can use it as a booster pedal along with your amp distortion. the overdrive acts as a booster amplifier, allowing you to add extra gain to the distrotion for lead parts etc. or for increasing sustain.
The Bad monkey also has very flexible eq, allowing you to change the tone of you amp distortion at the push of a pedal.
The best though is to listen to different pedals and select one that sounds good to you within your budget.
Cheers
