D3v3r3 Some ply guitars can actually be quite nice - I had a short scale bass a while back that was a great player.
If you are handy (I'm guessing you are from the re-finish), trying some wiring tricks can be fun experiments on a project. Treble bleed on the volume, different switching (neck + bridge or all 3 on) can get more out of a cheap(er) guitar.
Does it play okay? Sometimes the wood get compacted in the neck pocket and it can me a some effort (shims, etc) to get a decent action.
