BOSS DS-1 Mods — Chasing a Better Sound from a Cheap Pedal

The DS-1 is one of the most common pedals around, and modulator is doing what most of us never bother with — actually opening it up and fixing what's wrong with it, rather than just living with it or replacing it.
The problem with a stock DS-1 is structural: the distortion circuit is a hard clipper, which produces a buzzy, harsh sound that doesn't sit well in a mix. His approach is methodical — first a bias resistor change in the transistor stage to smooth the input signal, then targeting the clipping diodes to warm the tone up by introducing asymmetry. The mid scoop, that characteristic honkiness, gets addressed separately via a capacitor value change. Each fix is documented clearly with the component values and the reasoning behind the change.
Germanium diodes for the asymmetric clipping mod are available locally at Communica or Mantech — we're talking a few rand for parts that make a real, audible difference.

Thread is still active. If you've got a DS-1 sitting in the bottom of your bag, give it a read.
