Together Through Life: new Dylan album released on 27 April 2009

Dylan's 33rd studio album out today.

Here's a great review article by the Sunday Times' Andrew Donaldson:

From The Independent:

From The Chicago Tribune, including this gem:"Like its predecessors, “Modern Times” (2006) and “Love and Theft” (2001), it presents Dylan’s wreck of a voice in a remarkably warm light. Dylan can’t hit the notes – high, low or in-between – but it almost doesn’t matter":

How Long is Robert going to release Albums. I wonder how many of them are actually good. ?

I'd really like to hear this, his new album. I quite like Dylan, if not all the toons, then most of his lyrics.
My all time Dylan favourite ..... "All along the Watchtower" ..... my mood dictates whether I listen and jam with him, or with the other incredible version .... Jimi's!
Is he still good? Well, for me, some artists have a strange way of, you may only like one or two tracks initially, but the more you listen, the more the rest grows on you. Dylan
is one of those.

The funny thing is that the critics' consensus appears to be that his last three studio albums (admittedly released over a period of ten years), are some of his strongest since the 70's [Time out of Mind: 1997; Love and Theft: 2001; Modern Times: 2006]. Real turnaround from his 90's mediocrity was probably Oh Mercy in 1989 - it was as if Daniel Llanois reinvigorated Bob's writing and performance.

On those four albums there's plenty of proof IMO that Dylan, unlike some of his contempories, is not a tribute act to himself, but still has a valid canon of work he is legitimately adding to.

You could be right Riaan C. These Albums could be brilliant.

I haven't taken him seriously since "What's a sweetheart like you doing in a dump like this..." Infidels, I think it was. He was a huge part of my Childhood, I had to endure all the comments from my friends who couldn't understand his craft, saying "But he cant sing", I always used to respond "True but he does it so well!"

On "Before the Flood" with "The Band" he does some good versions of "Knocking on Heavens door", "dont think twice it's alright" and "Lay lady lay". Robbie Robertson adds some good lead guitar.

But what a good songwriter ?

They seem to be constantly getting better. Every new Dylan album is the best one since the last one that was better than something he did a long time ago. If he carries on like this we will eventually have the perfect album.
