This is a song i've been working on the last few days, have a listen and tell me what you think.
My intention was to get a sound similar to that of As I Lay Dying, Devil Driver etc..
It's still a work in progress so any feedback would be appreciated ?

very nice!!!
That tone is pretty solid...
Nice and beefy,
What gear/ setup did you use? and what drums?
andrewjbryson
it just seems as though the 2 tracks are slightly out of sync... but thats either to do with moving/latency, or you played them slightly differently
And I would also slightly boost the KickDrum at about 70 - 100 Hz and cut a bit off tops (very slightly), not so much that you loose the "click" sound..
otherwise great job

Thanks for the feedback.
I recorded it using my epiphone les paul special into a toneport gx. I used Gearbox as my amp sim with a cool preset I found on Line 6's website simply called 'metal'.
For drums I used Beatcraft, however the kit I used was from a small demo I had called Rhythm Rascal that had this cool metal kit with a very 'clicky' kick drum, but I'll fiddle with the EQ of the kick and see how it changes the sound.
The tracks may sound a bit out of sink merely cos of my sloppy playing, I should probably work on my accuracy. Most of the riffs recorded I left as is on the first or second take, I get a bit impatient with myself! Before this song I used to just record a riff once and place that same recording on another track, unawares that I the only thing I was doing was merely boosting the volume.

It's sounds decent ?
Those drum tones are letting you down though but it's understandable.
I know what you mean about being impatient hehe as I often cannot wait for an album to get to the final stage already, but once you do it properly you appreciate it a lot more. ?

I got mine new for +-R900, I can't remember the exact price but it was about that. It is the most amazing unit ever, and the gearbox software it came with I find far superior to GR3 and Amplitube in terms of achieving my desired tone.

What can I do to make them better? Cos I thought they sounded quite good haha ? Should I scrap the entire kit or try and fiddle with the EQ??

Good Stuff doc-phil
the toneport sounds good, Does it come with it's own recording software as well as the Amp Smulator?
Not much of a fan of metal , mostly because of the vocals ?, still trying to get my head around it. BUT I enjoy metal guitar, very intrigued and starting to practice a bit. What scales or modes do you guys use? Alternate tuning? or is it standard?
I bought Killswitch Engage and can just about handle the vocals ?
doc-phil
Thanks Squonk ?
That is the only downside to the toneport, based on what is says on the front of the box I was under the impression that it did come with recording software, but in fact it doesn't. I was a bit cross about that but I just downloaded Reaper and used that for a while. Now I use Mackie Tracktion 3 which I find much more user-friendly.
In terms of scales, I think maybe the dorian and phrygian are used a lot (don't take my word for it, I can't really remember) but to be honest I have no idea what modes I'm using, I just sort of go by feel from years of being a metalhead, I really don't know any theory, which is detrimental to my playing, especially when it comes to playing leads...
I tune my guitar down to drop C (C G C F A D) that seems to be the tuning that a lot of metal bands use. Some still go with standard or drop d like Trivium and I think DragonForce, but I find it doesn't give a thick enough tone. Also use thicker gauge strings to compensate for the slackness when tuning down.
I have very specific taste when it comes to metal vocals, I can't put up with the constant growling of grindcore bands etc, I like there to be a mix of screaming with normal singing, and the I like to be able to discern what is actually being said ?
andrewjbryson
Scales or modes in metal. Anything that sounds dissonant . Evil . Mysterious . Demented . Twisted . Dying and has come straight out of hell

Very nice! I like :bopping:
SpeedStar
You nailed the most important thing
ACURRACY
Very well put together good luck

I thought it was a pretty good piece of music, now you just have to get the stage act right.

Sorry for the hijack but how much did you pay for the toneport gx? :-[
Very nice track. I can't give you and helpful comments because I must still get there. ?

It was R1000 from Coastal Music in Durban. If you just wanna record guitar its perfect. I'd highly recommend the unit, just make sure you have a DAW before purchasing cos it doesn't come with one.
WantzChas
It is very nice, I like the break down at the end.

R1000 for a toneport is an awesome price! They retail for far more than that!
Which DAW did you use?
cain
BTW, nice playing!!!
Can you perhaps mail me that line6 patch?
doc-phil
I got the toneport just over a year ago so its probably gone up in price.. Also I heard that Line 6 has discontinued the unit ☹
I use Mackie Tracktion 3 for all my recordings, its really user-friendly which is exactly what I need cos I went into recording not knowing a thing.
Sure I can email you the patch, just PM me your email adress. I send one or two others if you like. The one I used for this song is simply called 'Metal'.
