Thanks,
I didnt know you can mod they grey block.
The acdc power boxes some guys use, are able to run 9 and 12 v. I just cant remember what brand it was, but it was available at Music Connection.
How do you modify the filter caps though? That is a great option.
Hi Shawnnvs,
Well I clearly have an older unit as mine is 9VDC out, neg tip on 5 2.1mm jacks, max 450ma rating.
Stock I felt it was pretty quiet but within the year the 'cheap' Chinese power trafo burnt out one of the windings, so I replaced it with a larger, better quality one.
At the same time I switched to a better quality National/Fairchild LM7809 regulator rated at 1amp and with the bigger power trafo, this gave/gives me alot more juice (almost double the stock unit).
Also the input filter caps were fairly small in size. If these are too small they lead to extra noise/ripple, increase these to 1000uF with some high temp, low ESR quality caps from the likes of Nichicon, Rubycon or Panasonic.
It has been a while but I prob changed a few things downstream as well according to the datasheet for the regulator.
All in all these changes took about an hour of my time and R100+ in parts.
Cheers
Matt
