Can you suggest some easy easier solos to learn?

Hi there all

Can you guys please suggest some of the easier solos around that I could try learn. Preferably if they are solos in metal songs that would be a bonus point.

I know the Whole Lotta Love solo and was busy with the Smoke On the Water one which was a nice easy pace and reasonably simple so basically that is like speed that I can do. Yes yes its not all about speed, I know ?

What about:

Guns n roses - knocking on heavens door
Metallica - nothing else matters
ACDC - You shook me all night long
Black sabbath - paranoid
Iron maiden - the trooper(little bit harder to play, but a good challenge)

IF you think about it most metal guitar players develop their style from older 70's and 80's rock/metal and mix it with the music they want to play(whatever genre of metal), and then get there own unique style.
like how many death metal guitar players is influenced by pantera, and black metal guitarists by dimmu borgir.

So you are on the right track learning from blackmore, next you can move on to iron maiden/judas priest or whatever sounds like it could be fun to jam.

What type of metal do you wanna play?

Geez Byron, if you can play the solo of "Whole Lotta Love", aim at more difficult solos, not easier ones, everyone can do "easy" stuff. A guy called Clive Calder told me many years ago
Jimmy Page practiced at least 8 hours everyday. Never forgot that, but never had so much time myself, probably the reason i never made it. If you have the time, do it!

Aim high, not low! And work at it!!!

List of solo's I learnt :

Most of them I couldn't play flawlessly but I got the just of them.

Black Sabbath - Warpigs / Black Sabbath
Metallica - Enter Sandman
Metallica - One
Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction / Trust / Almost Honest
Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train

A great solo/entire song to learn is by Joe Satriani - Love Thing or Up in the Sky (off Crystal Planet)
These are 2 of his easier songs to play.

Don't laugh.. But my 1st solo I learnt was Nirvana's 'Smells like Teen Spirit', easy and quite comforting when I learnt it.. ? I do find solos a bit boring though (Yes, you can start the slanting that I'm a drummer and know nothing ? ) But I found that learning the stuff from Breaking Benjamin very good for getting to play melody lines to add to the song.

hey instead of copying solo's .... why not just listen to the players you like .... intently so you pick up their idea's and technique.... and then just lay down some chords in your chosen style and create your own solo's influenced by your guitr heroes but not copying them, (we all influenced by other players)

just an idea cos unless you in some tribute band you never need to learn anyones solo .... even most bar cover muso's play basically their own solo's in cover songs.... just keep a few key recognisable licks.... this way you'll develop your own style.

Probably not. But neither were they once. You've stretched yourself and taken yourself some distance, so stretching yourself again will take you further. It maybe time to either start jamming with somebody else that you can pick up from or to take some lessons from a teacher who can impart the necessary techniques.

Me too!! Also I learnt the 'solo' from Greenday - Wake Me Up When September Ends, I thought I was the Mac when I first learnt those ?

yeah i 100% agree with Bob, jamming with people and finding a teacher is the best way to learn...and i know it's quite self centred but if you find someone to jam with always try find a jamming partner who is a better musician, not great for your own ego... but that way you learn from him/her rather than jamming with your peers

Absoloodely. I recently started working on some songs (covers) with my good friend Mike Burger who is a way better player than I am. It's made me up my game - especially in terms of precision. When I'm playing by myself if I miss the chorus or whatever I can just chuck another bar in. Playing with somebody else if I miss the chorus it's a balls up.

Hey Bob, I agree fully that by practicing anything (be it music, sport......whatever) with someone better than you are does up your game, no doubt!!
However, I also find that jamming (especially on covers) with the original track (from my computer) works for me, thereby getting it "virtually" spot on. The only set-back here is that one has to be brutally critical (and honest) with oneself, seeing you cannot "discuss" anything with a computer....hahaha.

There's a great quote from James Small, who was given the job of marking Jonah Lomu in the 1995 World Cup Final. When asked if he was scared he said (paraphrasing) "very scared. But I was even more scared of making a fool of myself in front of 40 000 people." So another good motivator is to determine to play somewhere in front of people (EG an open mic night) and to have 4 songs that you can still delivery reasonably well under all that added pressure.

Point taken. More reason to get my son to a teacher, instead of teaching him myself, and then helping and motivating him with his "homework"!

Can't be done. Maybe in terms of theory. Maybe. In terms of actual playing you have to get your fingers on a guitar and move them and make them do the right things in the right places. Extremely talented individuals may master some things quicker, and starting young definitely helps.

A 14-year old Eric Clapton would progress much faster than a 50-year old me.

But here is no substitute to DOING when there is a physical aspect to the skill being mastered. We might look at the latest cricket prodigy from India or the latest soccer hotshot from Brazil and observe that they have done so little practice, but that's FORMAL practice in a controlled environment with a coach etc etc. There would have been countless street games.

That book looks pretty unscientific to me - the author is cherry picking what fits with whatever it is he's trying to sell.

yeah i must add my voice to Bob's here ,

i have one particularly gifted student ...she is a young 12 yr old Indian girl who just had a desire to play and never having touched an instrument of any type before came to me 2 months ago for beginner lessons,

this young girl, has in only 2 months(8 lessons) mastered theory to way beyond some of my advanced players (who are in pro bands)

but as Bob mentions... she fully understands how music theory works and has recall on all the chord shapes , how they are made up.... understands keys and basic scales

but and here is the but

her motor skills are still at a point that she can't change chords fast enough to even learn a basic song yet.... but she knows the chord shapes(first position and all barre chords on E and A string )and how they relate musically and their formulae I, III, V ect ect .... so yeah almost instant recall and understanding on any theory i have taught her ... but the actual physical playing is what we working on now....

so yeah theory can be mastered and understood... in a short time.... but guitar playing goes way beyond just knowing what to do in ones head ..... one needs to do it physically ....

btw this girl if she continues will have a bright future as a musician....once she gets her motor skills developed... and i do see her as "gifted" but i still forsee many many hours of practise in her future ....
definitely no quick fix....

Another way to learn, If you dont have anyone to play with (Guitar that is) like me, is to watch live music or even buy Live DVD's.

I kind of worked out Claptons "Wonderful Tonight" lead and solo, and was quite taken aback when I saw him do it on the "24 Nights" DVD, I had the fingering all wrong, but so easy to pick up from the Live concert.

Still trying to work out John Mayers "Neon", quite hectic though.

Been playing "Message in a bottle" for years but also got help seeing Sting perform it on a nylon on one of the "Secret Policeman's Ball's" DVD.
Metal might be a bit more difficult, but you can always slow it down I suppose ?
