Ray I see a lot of posts re guitar builds but all for electrics. Has anyone on this forum had a go a t an acoustic? Anyone checked out www.kitguitarforum.com? What are the thoughts? I see guitar building courses on offer in UK and USA. I havenet come across anything like that in SA though. Not that it is an obsession but that it sure must be an interesting exercise.
Manfred-Klose Building a acoustic guitar takes years to perfect, but with a kit i think it would be a much easier approach to understanding the guitar. You can always get a few good books on building acoustic guitars, that really helps alot.
Gearhead Imho building an electric is a matter of making the right choices and you'll wind up with a great guitar at the same price a factory built great guitar would be. The best reason for doing it is getting something special, not saving any money. Making an acoustic at factory prices one would risk the 'hit or miss' effect. It could be great, then again it could easily be a dog. If you want to have something special it would be hard to make, hard to play or hard to get sounding right. If you really want to make one I would suggest building a kit because getting the materials together and machining them down to size is going to be a schlepp here. Plus, you must realise that the great builders discard the misses and thrive on the hits; you pay for both while getting one.
Bob-Dubery g1 wrote Also bare in mind that building an acoustic would require a number of specialist tools. And you have to worry more about climatic conditions. Should you brace the top when it's at 40% relative humidity? 20%? 30%?
Ray Ya , thinking along the kit line. I didnt think about this to save money or even to end up with something special. Just occurred to me that it might be an interesting exercise. You know, one of those "something to do before you die" things. I also want to climb K2 and swim across the channel.
Keira-WitherKay yeah, well one of my music students , who is quite a good luthier already on smaller jobs like setups ect has just purchased a martin kit for $700 without shipping cost, so not that cheap but sounds impressive.... and the wood offered are really nice.... luckily he lives very near and knows mervin davies so i guess at least excellent help is at hand...if he runs into problems.... but yeah i'm keen to see the result..... peace and light Keira
