Distributors change. When I was working at Bothner's they were the Celestion agents. Even back then, I had gone DI, so speakers weren't an issue for me.
To be honest, you only need a few speaker ranges to cover most everything you could ever want: Celestion, EV and Eminence. Eminence doesn't seem to have a local distributor, but I think some of their speakers are available as spares via Fender SA.
I have a December 2006 Celestion price list from ProfAudio and if those prices are anything to go by, they are ridiculously expensive to buy locally. They list the G12M Greenback at R2195, where the US RETAIL price (for a British speaker, remember - so import duties, distributors costs, shipping should bring it in to line with the local price) is $170 (R1360 + 14% VAT = R1550). If you look at street prices, they are $109 (R872 + VAT = R995). Now those local prices are a year out of date and the rand has slipped, so you're probably looking at R2500 - R2995 at the moment. Interestingly, you can buy a Laney cab with four
of them in for something like R4K - so I think someone is gouging prices.
But if you speak to a distributor, they will tell you that speakers don't sell. Ummm... Hello?
I'm going to email the new agents and ask them for their prices. Lets see if things have improved with the new distributor.
