In my search for a versatile low/medium wattage amp the Rebel 20 (http://www.egnateramps.com/Rebel20.html) made the top of the list, but albeit there is no local agency ☹ Though I have considered importing one...

Bruce Egnater is prob most know for this modular series that he designed for Randal, the MTS series, but also well known for his supped up Marshal 18 Watter Clones (apparently he gives amazing 18Watter DIY workshops) and last year debuted the first in the line of new amps, the REBEL 20.

What makes it so a amazing is that it not only has a pair of 6V6's (Fender) output valves but ALSO a pair of EL84's (Vox, Marshall etc) and you can use a pot to BLEND from one into the other, the other major innovation is that unlike most amps with attenuators that have preset gains you can sweep through from 1 Watt to the full 20 Watts.

Another nice feature not seen on many amps today is an effects loop and SWITCHABLE line voltage power supply, this is BIGGY for me as I hate it when amps only have single primary tap... GRRR.

Besides sounding cool it looks cool to and the reviews I've read have been singing their praises to no end!

AGGGG, too many options, not enough time and/or money ???

There was a discussion on the Strat list a few weeks back. Unfortunately I didn't follow it, but it's probably still in the archives on Yahoo groups. One thing I do remember is that the consensus was that the blend knob didn't make much difference to the tone.

My amp switches between EL84 and 6V6 and I find that you hear the difference mostly in the mids, where the EL84 is more in your face, and when heavily distorted, where the 6V6 goes into sorta rumbling barking mode and the EL84 just wants to (s)cream. Methinks if there's little tonal difference there must be something about the transformer or the blending that's making that difference. I'm using the Mesa patented switching technique whereas they can't. If the cause is not after the power valves, then the guys could be scooping the preamp too much I guess.

if you liked those, then check out the blackstar series one - soon coming to SA. Much better IMO.

The egnators are great in theory, but I have seen a few reviews that say they are versatile but the tube tone just isn't there.

I dont know. I like them though.

Apparently the power grid does nothing in practice
