I had the same problem in my search for an amp. I play kinda the same type music you do. After spending the better part of 4 hours at music connection testing almost every amp, I walked away with a Bugera. It's fairly new amp on the SA market and is made by Berringer(yeah, I know I know). Not a fan of Berringer myself, but I ended up choosing between Peavey Classic 50 and Bugera valve. It just ended up being the better option and I digged the tone (specially for blues). Now after doing a few gigs with it, I am totally in love with it. It also have a cool warm overdrive and very nice clean.
Price? well, they are marked at R9900, and i got it for R6500. The best amp I ever played on. That's just my opinion. Also, If you're looking for something to mess around with at home, try the classic30, which you can also get at a relatively affordable price.
Maybe pop past Turnkey(if you live in Joburg), they've got some specials on their amps (Vox, peavey ect..)

You might consider something like a Line 6 pod which has software modelling of all sorts of amps (and effects pedals) built into it. So you could have a country amp, a jazz amp, a metal amp (or settings to suit) in one device.

I think that should drive headphones, and it would have a line out that you could plug into a computer or hi-fi.

For a first decent amp the modelling ones are hard to beat, because they are affordable, readily available secondhand and give you a range of amp sounds - which will help you form an opinion of what you want to go for when you upgrade. Usually they have a couple of effects built in as well. I quite like both the Roland Cubes and the Vox modelling amps. A 30W model is a great size for home and smaller jamming situations, but if you're going to be performing, you should be looking at the 50 - 100W models.

If you play at home, don't fall into the bigger the better trap! I think its better to get a low wattage good quality valve amp than spending the same on a higher wattage solid/hybrid with wattage u don't really need. Quality is the winner! ?
Since I got a 5W valve, I haven't played my 40W once. (played at home and at churchs/smallish venues with a drummer.

so my thoughts are: look for a 5W - 15W valve combo (anywhere from 4K to 10K average)
but then it also depends what you want to get out of playing guitar and what is a viable amount to spend with that in mind... a 15W roland cude could suit your purposes, or even a POD like Bob suggests.

I bought a Vox ac15cc1 a couple of weeks ago. I'm planning on doing a full review at a later stage after the speaker is broken in,but I can tell you I am very happy with it, it's a small tube amp which is exactly what I was looking for. If you spend some time looking around you can find good deals, the trick is to be patient, I spent some time waiting and looking. Also, when you find something, take that Epi of yours with and try it out first.

Okok, very opinionated post here.

Danie let me beg you to reconsider here. DO NOT BUY OR SELL ANYTHING JUST YET. As Sean said, patience is the best friend of your wallet and your tone. If I were you I would do the following:
- take both the Epi and the Tele to a shop where they have cool amps. They should be 5W preferrably, perhaps up to 15W and tube. Search this forum up front on expensive all tube amps that people are enthousiastic about, money is not an issue just yet. Pick one, turn it up as far as they will let you, play your guitars through it and feel it. Notice the way your sound changes with different attack, how power chords are raw but not harsh and how single notes seem to almost play as loudly as full chords - if any of those things is not in place you can bet the guitar is better off in someone else's hands.
- go home and sleep on it.
- should you decide to keep the guitars, try to figure out if you want to go for the software modelling on PC, modelling pedals such as the POD or if you want to hold out until you can afford an entry level tube amp. The best is not to want anything new - amps don't really wear and parts are cheap. Speakers are not so cheap but last long, 10-20yrs.

The point the guys are trying to make here, is that there are two guitars any electric player should have: a Les Paul and a Tele. You have both, do not give one away until you're upgrading it.
