Difficult to come up with the composition.
That's one of the things I'm pushing - it's more difficult to come up with a coherent composition with one instrument. Multitrack recording makes it easy to lay down a beat, strum a few chords and widdle over the top of it. But faced with having to come up with something complete on our guitars, we often fall flat.
Tried the acoustic but the thing just doesn't respond, or are my fingers just not aligned to the music in me?
I've never been comfortable on steel acoustics, they require playing with a bit more force than I'm accustomed to using with an electric or nylon.
They are also quite sensitive to relatively subtle differences in picking force, so it takes a lot to get things sounding consistent. Strumming is a lot easier, especially if you just lay in and play flat out, but the relatively gentle style of fingerpicking tends to reveal flaws in technique very quickly. A subtle compressor can help, but be careful not to squeeze all the dynamics out of the performance (try a 2:1 to 3:1 ratio).
