A Raw mix for you to critique

Here's something I just did using Amplitube 2 on the JC2 setting with a cheap fender rippoff guitar plugged straight into the pc's onboard sound.Just panning + volume + reverbs, nothing else.

It's nice and mellow, I don't have a good enough ear to comment. How do you record from amplitube?

Nice! I like the pad-like stuff you're doing with the reverb. Isn't there some modulation in there as well - from about 30sec? Seems a bit too resonant to be just panning.

The JC2 setting in amplitube 2 is the ROLAND Jazz Chorus amp, the "pad" stuff was just another line that I reversed and added a lot of reverb to etc, so I think that's were the modulation might of come from, it's technically two modulation sounds played against each other which might create a third "phantom" modulating sound on top of the other two........(maybe, I don't know?)

I recorded into sonar, a raw guitar track, then ran amplitube2 on it.

The only other setting I like in amplitube is the EVH2 setting.But all those amp simulator plugins sound still too "not right" for me.Maybe it's just because I don't use good pickups into a good preamp etc?
Has anybody gotten a really good distortion sound from them yet?

I tried all the demo's: Amplitube2, Amplitube Metal, Guitar Rig3, Peavey Revalver, Overloud, Waves Guitar and a couple others I cant remember, but they all sound the same, all too "digital".

Very possible - I get "phantom sounds" all the time.

How are you getting the guitar into your computer - what is your audio interface, preamp, etc.? Aside from your guitar, that's the one thing all the programs have in common.

Should be able to - it runs as a VST plugin. You should also be able to hear the modelled guitar amp sound as you record.

I get my guitar into the pc with a cable, no joke, just guitar into cable straight into the green mic input of my pc's onboard sound.

That's why I wanted to know if it's possible to get a good sound with those programs using a good preamp and good pickups etc?

There are two problems with that. Firstly, the quality of built-in soundcards leaves a lot to be desired. Secondly, mic inputs are low impedance, while a guitar needs a high impedance - the impedance mismatch kills a lot of the tone and dynamics of the guitar. Using A DI box in-between to solve the mismatch will make quite a difference to the sound.

It's possible - that's all I'm using these days.
