it's a old wifes tail about the chemicals , after doing the beer tour a few years ago i moaned in the guest book about the chemicals in castles , not only did the marketing director give me a call regarding it , i was invited on a personal tour os the brewery's and i know from personal expierience , Castle is brewed like any natural beer (been a hobbyist brewer)
But it's no longer an all malt beer. Most German lagers still conform to the old "reinheitsgebot" which stipulated that beer had to be produced from, and only from, malted barley, hops, yeast and water. That law made a special provision for the inclusion of a percentage of wheat in the brew but such beers have to be sold as "weiss bier".
Most SAB brews now include other grains, which keeps costs down and may also add lightness of body. Many American brews include rice in the mix as this helps to produce a beer with lightness of body.
Castle now is definitely what it used to be. I'm not saying that things may not change, just that this beer has. Mid 80s I started noticing a change, and by 1990 or so switched first to Black Label, then to Windhoek.
