I'm learning a valuable lesson (the hard way):

--> Theory books cost about R 200; guitar lessons are less than R 100 each

--> GAS acquisitions seem to start at R 1,000 and head upwards very quickly

where do you get guitar lessons for less than R100 each heheheh it's normally a hint higher than that per lesson ....to make it viable....

mmm and like my dear old mum likes to say "if you pay peanuts you get monkeys"

In this forum I seem to open my mouth to change feet ?
I probably have my numbers all wrong.

The point I was trying to make is that many people will invest in new equipment before they invest in learning how to play them.
Myself included.

I'm trying to encourage more people to learn more, including going for lessons !!

For a while I've had it in my head that there's a couple of things by Gilbert And Sullivan (yes... THAT Gilbert And Sullivan) that are great songs and could be performed by one person and a guitar. The one I settled on was "Tit-Willow". I discussed this with my guitar teacher. There are no guitar tabs to be downloaded. I got about half of it down by ear, but then in the middle part of the verse it shifts into some other key or scale or both. However, we now have chords mapped out for the song and I can start trying to work up an arrangement that doesn't require an orchestra. Already this has taken me into some new harmonic ground with chords like A9 and Bm7 -5.

It takes time and is a personal journey.

I play professionally and getting a modal sound FINALLY came to me a few weeks ago. One thing that unlocked it was when someone said "U have to play the MODE completely (i.e add as much of it as you can Root to Root) over the chord.
Now; this does NOT mean play D dorian over D-, because that will sound stale.
If you want a Dorian sound, you should get it right by playing D Dorian over a G7 for example. You should, but like I said; it took me years of not just practice, but gigging, jamming and growing up that finally created a teeny weeny breakthru.

I think I am going to find a teacher :-[
Theory is something I will need to embrace, I would never play a D Dorian (even if I could) over a G7, I just have no clue on the relationship between the two ?
Any good teachers in the JHB, closer to the West Rand? 8)
