Yea , at the end of the day its all about your EAR, and if it sounds cool to you, it will probably sound cool to others too.
"Practice modes until your blue in the face"?
"Practice scales until your blue in the face"?
"Practice chromatic runs until your blue in your face?"
Although boring, it will build up your arsenal of playing....
Learn scales, arpeggios, inversions, modes, chords, voicings, triads, etc...
But do it constuctively. Dont just practice one thing, balance it out.
Draw up a list of your goals and how will you achieve it?
Draw up a practice roster of how many minutes/hours you will dedicate to each concept.

Will def do that - thanx a lot! The first time i`m hearing the word chromatic run, going to google it now...
Manfred-Klose
You can also go and learn other guitar solos, try and analize it, figure out what chords are being used in the rhytmn section, find out what key is it(if it is in one), try and figure out what modes the dude in soloing in.
Squonk
Thanks
Will try the blue in the face stuff, but with a plan. ?

Chromatic - means colorizing , just a fancy word for boring 1-2-3-4 exercises
They like to refer to pitches as different colors....
Start slow and play
E -1-2-3-4 , then A - 1- 2- 3 -4 then D - 1 - 2- 3 -4 , etc...
then try
E 4-3-2-1
then try
E -4 - 2- 3 - 1
then try
E- 4 - 1 - 3 - 2
and you get the idea... just randomize and do "tongue twisters" for your fingers ?

Struggling to find theory or explanation on what chromatic runs r?? what is it, consecutive notes played fast, how do i make my own??
Shredder3211
Oh ok thanx..

Do u know of a good website that has all the music theory? Or does anyone know of a place in Cape town that has music theory classes for guitar, seriously considering attending theory classes but don`t know where?

Manfred made a valid point about listening to other guitar player's playing.
Try hear what images / sounds they are creating with their style.
Some like to stay in pentatonic minor, keep it bluesy...
Some like to use Lydian mode to create an atmosphere for intro's etc...
Harmonic Minor to create Evil / mystery
Natural Minor a feeling of sadness.
Pentatonic Major - eastern / asian sound
Chromatic runs - feeling of chaos ... example (Michael Angelo Batio)
The possibilities are endless...
I used to listen to a lot of Vai.... and flying in a blue dream was my Favourite Satriani song....
So its no wonder Lydian is my favourite mode ?
After a while you start adopting blends of styles of your favourite players...

+1 with AJB (Andy, you've been Karma'd) 8)
@ Quinus : To really start getting the tonalities of the various modes, i'd say, in addition to listening to the notes, you should listen to whats happening between them (i.e. the intervals). Here's a lick that i cop'd from Petrucci's "Wild Stringdom" to bring out the Dorian sound (play the A Dorian first and then play the following lick..you'll get what i'm going on about):
E 12 15 b (17) rb 15
B 12 13 12 13 12 (mild vib)
G 9 12
D 9 10
A 7 10
E 7 8
May the force be with you... (b = Bend; rb = Release bend)
arjunmenon
And here's a chromatic infused lick to get you thinking...
E 7s8 9 10 11s12 7s8
B 8 9 10 9 8s9 NH
G 5 6 7 8s9 10 10 9s10 (12)
D 5 6 7 11 11
A 3 4 5 6s7
E 3 4 5
NH = Natural Harmonic
Pay attention to your picking. Cheers
Griffin
Thanks Arjun
What is "6s7" an how do you play it?
Shredder3211
it`s 6 slide to 7 (6th fret slide to 7th)
Dirk
Great Arjun.. I'll also try it out 8)
arjunmenon
Sorry about that. Forgot to mention that "s" stands for slide.
Hope you guys benefit from it
