Best Ever African "World Music" Band???

aubs1

Thought I'd skip Rock, Shredding, etc for a while. "World Music"?
This my all time favourite band out of Africa. Youssou N'Dour is an awesome vocalist, and the musicians in his band are simply fantastic. I have the CD, and this live recording is as close as it comes to the studio version. Listen to saxophonists solo, and the guitarists fills!
I share this opinion with musos like Peter Gabriel (another one of my favourites) and others.

Nice.
There are many styles in "Africa".

Another goodie --> Jammu Africa from Ismael Lo.

I'll limit my posts here ... as I have too much to say and will drive everyone mad.
Both of the below have strong 1st world influences.

Here's an example of the indigenous stuff.

Well what about The Genuines? Fantastic sort of funk/punk band from Cape Town, played a lot around Jo'burg in the late 80s. They had a sound that was heavily influenced by the sounds of the coloured areas of Cape Town.

And, of course, Tananas.

When does it become "World Music"? Do Osibisa count? How about Bright Blue with that township organ sound?

A key record in all of this was, of course, Paul Simon's Graceland with several South African musicians and also members of King Sunny Ade's band.

Yes, I agree. there was, and still are quite a lot of brilliant bands and individual musos around.
Youssou N'Dour and his band are only my personal favourites.

I saw them in concert some years ago. This was on the Amnesty International "Human Rights Now!" tour. That tour stopped off at Harare. Gabriel and N'Dour were both part of the tour. Oliver Mutukudzi was added to the bill for that night. N'Dour and his band were marvellous.

The tour ended up in (IIRC) Sierra Leone. A lot of the big name acts on the tour were not well known there and N'Dour topped the bill at that show and had Springsteen and Sting as support acts ?
