Hey Guys, I'm moving to Cape Town soon and wondered if there are any decent guitar shops people could recommend?

Where exactly in Cape town are you moving to?

Wicked, thats a great help chaps! For some reason google wasn't throwing those sites at me! Specifically, I was looking for a Left Handed steel strung acoustic for about R2500. Fingers crossed I'll find one!

I know it is not exactly the same area, but I've always had good experiences with Musiekwêreld (in Bellville and Brackenfell). Worth a shot if you are looking for something the shops closer to you doesn't have ?

Hey leebo, while you're in Hout Bay it will take you 20 mins to get to Bothner's in Plumstead. Always done their best for me.

While you're in Milnerton, it will take you 10 mins by car (not peak hours!) to visit CBD based stores. Another option is to take a 20 min drive over the scenic Conterman's Kloof to get to the area dubbed "Bellville Rock City". The moniker is directly attributable to the sheer level of talent originating in the area, situated in the Tygerberg Valley, 12 miles North of Cape Town. Here you will find (as mentioned previously on the thread) numerous specialist musical shops and naturally, enthusiasts in the music field. Worth a visit.

We build this city on rock & roll.

Without straying from the subject, the Bellville area must be the coolest place to be if you enjoy live music. Yes, Cape Town does feature some great venues for seeing live bands.
If you take Corner Bar for instance, this is where most new up and coming bands start.
For the metal / hard core scene there is Eye Of Horus, another great venue.

Stellenbosch: Aandklas, there you will find the hottest Afrikaans Rock music!

There are a couple of music shops in the Milnerton area. There's one in the new mall on Bosmansdam road, and one down Blaauwberg road. I think there's one in Parklands and of course a huge shop in the city centre on Buitengracht street with a selection to make your eyes pop out. Rather than recommend any of them I would prefer to go along with you and introduce you to proprietor and turn it into a friendly, personal occasion, rather than just a business transaction. After all this is a very special event and not just a silly little triple bypass operation where you're just another piece of meat or a paying customer. ???

I think the Capetown population supports more their bands than here in Joburg. Over here it seems that the crowds tend to support the DJ thing more than the bands. I mean in CT, whenever there's a band playing, the crowds show up in numbers, but over here, you struggle to get a few people to attend a gig, unless its an Afrikaans band. What happened to the good ole Rock n Roll supporters? We've got some kick@ss bands over here as well...

Can't wait to check out the music scene in CT. I just spent the weekend with a couple of South Africans I hadn't sen for a while and they were telling me about it. They reckon there's a huge metal scene in CT, are there any decent clubs/venues I should check out?

The one in Parklands is in the big SuperSpar centre (at the back - next to the FNB ATM). Stock selection a bit small at present (just opened a few months ago), but open on Sundays - which is a big plus if you need consumables (plectra, cables, etc) in an emergency for a Sunday gig. The shop on Blaauwberg Rd (Guitar Centre) is run by a seasoned muso (Tony), which is always a plus in my book. Great shop, that one.

Take up Da Fiz' offer for a tour once in the area. But for the big purchases, Marshalls in the CBD, and Bothners in N1 City (Goodwood) and Plumstead are just a short commute away. Bt also enquire from Tony at Guitar Centre about any model you have in mind. Although he may not have it in the shop (kinda small store), he sources things very competitively.

The big shop is in the CBD with a selection that would suit most needs.
In my neighbourhood (TableView) is a small shop with a very friendly/helpful proprietor...
a very important aspect in my book.

Used ones are easy enough to find...
