Lovely stuff Riaan!
PS: What's he playing? Looks like a Strat, but just one humbucker? Weird ...
It's a Strat. With just one humbucker. ?

Eddie van Halen used to play a "Strat" with just a single humbucker in it. It was put together from various bits and pieces. What you call such a guitar I don't know ?
It's become known as a Frankenstrat. A total of $130 worth of Charvel-made neck and body, Floyd Rose bridge and a Gibson humbucker. Ironically, the $25,000 EVH Frankenstrat clone is made by Fender (complete with non-working neck single-coil and switch).
Knopfler's famous red "strat" was not a Fender at all - also assembled from bits and pieces from various sources.
Actually, Mark's Early '80s Strats were Schecter made. The common myth that they were partscasters came from the fact that Schecter was best known as a replacement parts manufacturer, but the guitars (two red Strats and one sunburst and a Tele) were all bought complete from Rudy's in 1980.
What interests me here is that he's down to just two control knobs on the instrument.
Common with fingerpickers on Strats (you'll see my volumes are usually where the first tone would be) - stops you from accidentally turning down the volume.

weeeeeeeee he had no dress sense hehheheh a balding middle age man with a vest on international tv...NOT COOL....
He never bought into the '80s image thing, wearing whatever he found practical on stage. Ironically, his wearing a headband to stop the sweat from running into his eyes spawned hundreds of imitators (you'd see guys in bar bands wearing them, even in the dead of winter).
Love the Atkins/Knopfler clip -
Neck and Neck is one of my favourite Knopfler albums. There is another of his side projects well worth getting into (if you haven't already) -
The Notting Hill Billies, which is American-style folk and country. His recent solo albums have been oriented more to British folk and are heavier on acoustics with an occasional Les Paul.
