Hi all, First post here.
I would like to know what format (Laptop/desktop) you are using for recording and running you DAW and other plug ins. And more importantly the spec of the machine (Cpu type and speed, Ram, OS etc..) and sound card. Setting up a studio now and trying to get an idea of what is needed and works best. Or at least what I can get away with...lol.
Thanks.

Hi Wes,
I will start off with what I currently use:
AMD Phenom Quad Core CPU.
8GB Memory (4 2GB modules, one for each core).
1TB of disk space
22” screen.
I’m waiting for 64Studio (Linux recording OS) to download so I can install this on the new computer.
This computer is over spec for recording, I’m going to use it as a duel boot machine. Will also install Ubuntu for work purposes.
You have 2 options when it comes to the software. You can buy Windows recording studio software or you can go the open source (free) route with Linux.
I would say a AMD dual Core CPU with 2 – 4 GB of memory should be fine. Just remember that you will need to place memory for each core to use. So you can go for 2 1GB modules or 2 2GB modules. The 2 2GB modules will work out cheaper in the long run.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Cheese, do I will like a geek right now ?

O one more thing, I don't work for AMD. I just prefer this in the desktop and server world.
Intel failed me one time too many. You are welcome to go the Intel way ?

Well most guys here know what I use.. But here is a run down..
Studio:
Mac Duel Quad 2.8Ghz
4Gig RAM
ProTools HD
Tannoy Precision *, Tannoy Eclipse *, Mackie HR824 monitors
Home:
MacBook Pro
2Ghz
2 gigs of RAM
MBox Pro, Digi003
ProTools LE
Yamaha MSP5 monitors
But there are other things also to consider..Inputs? Loose mic pre's or mixing console.. Microphones.. MIDI
If you are going to go for a naitive DAW.. Basicaly everything except PT HD, you're going to have a minimum of 2gigs RAM.. That is cause plugins take alot of processing power.. Virtual instruments also take quite a lot..
Setting up a studio is a broad comment.. But for interfaces there are quite a few to suite every budget.. I'd prefer an PCI type interface.. RME makes good ones, but cause I'm running a mac book a Firewire interface is awesome.. the mbox is a bit sluggish (USB I HATE YOU!!)..
There are quite a few FireWire interfaces around.. Esp. the RME stuff is cool, but a bit more expensive.
Plugins.. well, a lot of the DAW's come with decent plugins, and if you are going the VST route, then there are quite a few free downloadable plugins on the net.. And even if they are freeware, they sound awesome..
As for me, I use the bindled stuff from protools, Waves and looking at the Focusrite Liquidmix.

AMD 6400+ Black Edition CPU
2gb of Kingston HyperX
250gb odd of disk space
Maya44
just remember if you using XP anything over 2gb odd is a waste as the 32bit OS (Windows XP/Vista32) cannot see over 3.xgb of RAM. 64 bit OS will read it fine.

nice one..thanks for the responses. I think I will do a desktop machine with separate video card, that way free's up more proc power for the daw apps and plug in's. Will do moderate proc like intel 2.2 gig core duo with 3 gigs ram and separate agp graphics card. Also have a P4 3gig hyper threading proc with 1mb L2 cache and 800mnz FSB, may use that. thanks again for the input.
