Spyke While doing some research I found out that Hondo was also involved in the Gibson lawsuits that took place in the late 70's. No doubt for headstock design. I've also found out that there were a few dubs but quite a few gems to be had from the Korean manufacturer who was producing shop quality guitars before such a thing even properly existed. My question is for those in the know, how would you tell a lawsuit era Hondo II LP from the duds (barre the serial #)? I've heard conflicting stories about the bolt-on vs set neck. I've seen some with pearl inlays and stylized pearl 'H' on the headstock, and I've seen plain decal'ed headstocks too. Any input appreciated.
AlanRatcliffe Simple - look at the headstock shape - if it has the Gibson "open book", it would be referred to as a "Lawsuit model", although the term is overused these days and doesn't necessarily mean it's a better guitar.
Keira-WitherKay mmmm i have bad memories of Hondo... think back in the 80's my 1st strat copy was one and it sucked.... but i then i had a kawai strat and i swear it was as close to a usa strat as can be... i also believe they had legal probs about copying so closely, havn't seen a kawai strat around for ages.... anybody know what happened to them????? peace and light K
Spyke Would you call this a 'lawsuit' headstock? and any help with the serial number would be appreciated H740W1 or H74OWI
AlanRatcliffe No - that's got an extra bump in the middle of the all-important top bit. Here's the Gibson one:
nick havent got a better picture but my ex Hohner Les Pauls headstock looks pretty close to the gibson one.
Spyke Ah ok. Thanks Alan. It's a new toy and I was just wondering about it's value. I'll post pics once it's cleaned up a bit.
