Where do you get your music?

I was looking through my old discussions on here when I came across one of mine about Simfy, a streaming service I used to use a lot.

I've used quite a few over the years: Last.fm, Simfy, Rdio and now... Apple Music. Which I love. It's like R59 a month and it has everything.

My biggest issue with the others is that they didn't have older Metallica albums, Def Leppard, AC/DC and a couple other "mainstays".

Apple Music doesn't have that problem. And my wife gets annoyed trying to find music so I told her I can upgrade us to the family plan which is a pretty good price for 3-5 family members or something. I don't remember the price right now but it seemed reasonable.

Anyhow... that got me to thinking... where do YOU get YOUR music from? And what do you love/hate about it?

Youtube mostly ?

It's soo easy to use, I dig the randomness autoplay and recommendations brings too. There's a huge range of stuff to listen to and occasionally the video is entertaining. I listen to a lot of edm mixes & there's a steady supply of really good stuff I don't see anywhere else (maybe vimeo).

The artists/song owners don't get fair compensation and the playback quality, even on hd is not as good as rivals. Bandcamp is way better in both regards.

I use Google Play Music. Also R59 a month or if you have a family R89 for up to 5 family members with up to 10 devices each. I have found all the old stuff I like, Thin Lizzy, Styx, etc. What is also nice is it is linked to your Google account, so you can log in on your PC, phones tablets etc and they are all synchronised.

You can stream and purchase outright.

Mostly Use YouTube. easy to use, got the added benefit of having visuals. And often just have it playing in the background while I do other stuff, otherwise I Use Deezer.

Don't the ads irritate you guys using YouTube? I sometimes put it on my Xbox and it's nice to have the videos but the ads are annoying.

And at a party or braai, people end up staring at the TV ?

Never heard of Deezer, care to share your favourite things about it?

Interesting to see how similar all the pricing is in ZA.

I do love the feature of getting "similar songs" recommended to me. It doesn't work great all of the time but it has definitely lead to some fantastic finds.

Thinking back like 20 years ago, I used to use Audiogalaxy and it had a fantastic system, bar none, for finding you good music to listen to. I don't think I should bother to count the number of "deeply significant" songs I found through that platform. I suppose I was also a teenager so the bar for a song to become "deeply significant" was pretty low ?

I totally agree about the platforms (and so, the artists) earning some money from us. It's critical to me. That's one of the reasons I don't download music anymore and also pay for Netflix and a VPN. Just "leeching" without anyone earning anything... it's not sustainable and the good art will just die.
