For my sins, I have committed to learning and playing a few lead guitar Shadows numbers for this Saturday's Shadows Club Northern Chapter gig. Now, I played most of the Shadows numbers in my band in 1960's but haven't played them since, and working through them again I'm reminded of the brilliance of Hank B Marvin... his expression, phrasing and of course his compositions and arrangements. To cover them, one has to be true to each number otherwise it just sounds bad... and that's the challenge... God help me.
Ah, yes, Shadows... My entire solo repertoire consists of, well (blush), 4 or 5 poorly played Shadows songs. Learned at mother's knee waay back. Shadows, who listens and plays them anyway, boring simple last-century "twing-twing-ting-tung-tang --- twing twinga-tinktunk-ting..." type background noise. Really...
That is a perception I've noticed with many people, but the truth is as stated above - "I'm reminded of the brilliance of Hank B Marvin... his expression, phrasing and of course his compositions and arrangements." So true. The man did understand the basics of playing a guitar. One of my pals used to say his all-time favourite bassist is the guy from the Shadows. It is not easy to reproduce the sound, not even the rythm, or the subtle pauses and bends. Enjoy!
