How much can should a beginner expect to pay for guitar lessons in Johannesburg?

What do 'expensive lessons' included... what do cheap lessons get you?

Cheap lessons and expensive lessons are determined by your need.
Having a formal music theory back ground helps but if you are a total beginner with no inkling of chords the more expensive route is prolly the best way to go with a reputable music tutor.
If you have some knowledge of chords, rhythm and a basic understanding of theory and scales it may be worthwhile getting a tutor for improving technique or visually showing chording structures, lead and rhythm patterns.

The second option will however be determined by your need and the availability of a coach. As to price per hour, it varies.

I would pay a tutor with qualification and a performance track record more than the standard technique polishing coach who just plays in a local band.

Option three is Google provided you know what you are looking for. I have had some excellent tuition videos from there which improved my playing and showmanship.

No idea in Jozi - in Cpt from R100-R300/lesson - (1/2hr - 1hr depending on the teacher).

A experienced teacher will have a plan/guide, is able to adjust their knowledge to your skill level & will help you set and achieve goals. I've had two, both were great and really helped me develop, still processing lessons I had years ago - they was all packed full of good info.

A inexperienced teacher may not really be able to adjust their knowledge to how you could best learn. I've had one, guy was a wizard guitar player, but couldn't get his knowledge across to stoopid me. I learnt nothing.

The hidden bonus to a experienced teacher is all their contacts - don't underestimate this if you want to get into/experience the world of a working musician.

In Gauteng, evolucian (aka Peter Theron) and Keira Witherkay are both teachers I reckon I'd learn a lot from. I particularly enjoy the lessons Peter has shared on the forum - Search the GFSA for the "The gentle art of ripping someone's face off", this was a great one on leads/solo's.

I know this probably doesn't answer your question. But the best thing I could've done is to contact Kierra Witherkay (she is on the forum) for classes. She taught me music concepts instead of just teaching guitar and travels (iirc) between JHB and Pretoria (where she lives)
