I visited TOMS this morning and found a lady I think is worthy of my harem. It's called the Dark Stone or DN from Ibanez.

Sapele neck and body [which I heard is close to Mahogany]
Tight Tune Bridge & Tailpiece [Ibanez's take on the TOM bridge I guess]
Coil Tap and new pickups.

This is a heavy guitar, but the tones!!!. I played it through both a Cube60 as well as a Marshall JVM and it to me is out of this world plus I love the shape.[ Black & chrome...very classy ] 8) . I think I'm picking her up this coming weekend if all goes to plan.

Indeed. Several makers are using Sapele as an alternative to Mahogany these days. Boutique brands such as Fylde, and also bigger output concerns such as Martin, Taylor and Larrivee.

As a wood lover, I am still astounded when beautiful looking woods are painted. * sigh *
I have a large mirror above the fireplace in my lounge - made the frame out of Sapele.

And Pudauk could possibly be close enough to maple,

Then what would replace brazilian rosewood?(besides madagascan/indian rosewood)

......the truth is out there, somewhere, just have to find it.

There are a dozen more rosewoods: cocobolo, pao escrito, et. al.

It's not the same as rosewood, but I've taken a liking to pao ferro as a fingerboard.

The only thing I would've changed on the guitar would've been a Ebony Fretboard...My Eclipse has spoilt me something sick. I don;t like the rosewood feel on my other guitars anymore. It does look like the Ravelle...I was tryinhg to think of the guitar it looks like, but for some reason could only think of BC Rich ?!?!?

+1 on the ebony (especially as it does not have a maple cap). It is reminiscent of some of the B.C. Rich guitars.

Palo Escrito. Ziricote. Cocobolo. Camatillo (AKA "Mexican Kingwood"). And I have seen references to "Amazon Rosewood" which apparently is also from Brazil and a very similar wood but not subject to the same controls (or commanding the same prices).

I just checked on the rare woods price list, they dont have any of it, but i'll check with some other wood retailers.

You can check out some of those woods at www.benjaminguitars.co.uk. In particular there's a lovely piece of deep red Cocobolo and some lucious Camatillo.

Country Woods has some Cocobolo.
It's a true rosewood.
(I think it might sink in water)
Popular with the wood turners.
Obscenely heavy, expensive and usually only available in small pieces.

You should check out Country Woods.
Much smaller than Rare Woods, but the people there are really warm and welcoming.
Much easier to establish a relationship with the guys, who will keep an eye open for the kind of offcuts you're after.

Well....it seems as much as you have an exact idea of what you want, as soon as you walk into the guitar shop, your plans mean nothing. I went on Saturday to buy the DN500, but I walked out with this

I never thought I'd see the day that I'd buy a bass, but this thing is out of this world. I got a bass micro cube to go with it for a start and although the amp hasn;t got that much in the volume department, it's still much better than the other starter amps I have seen.
