First time guitar

I am looking for a starter guitar for a 12 year old. He is very interested in playing but his parents are not so sure :-\. We are looking for a medium sized acoustic between R400 and R600.

My best advice is to heed your byline of -If it is worth doing, it is worth doing well. IMO cheap guitars make learning that much harder than a guitar with a good action and nice sound.

cheap guitars are 'usually' bad guitars. bad guitars are not easy to play - do not feel good or sound fine.

Do check out gumtree with a budget in mind. you can get very decent instruments at reasonable prices.

If it is for a first time beginner... I would recommend a classical type, nylon stringed instrument. The neck is wider and thus easier for a beginner to fret the strings cleanly.
