Hi All

I'm Lance. Thanks for accepting. I play mostly jazz and a bit of everything I consider good music. I stay in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town
I started playing classical guitar in 1989 at the age of 15 and moved over to bass around 1994 (a cop-out in hindsight). I played in a three-piece jazz band for a while. Again in hind-sight... we were a shitty band, but I enjoyed every moment of it. "Real Life" happened after varsity and I only occasionally picked up a bass or guitar at home. The bug bit me again in 2013 and it's been full-steam ahead ever since (Mid-life crisis personified 8)). I play in a 5-piece jazz band now and also recently started a duo with a local vocalist. We also play mostly jazz standards and our jazzed-up versions of all sorts of rock, pop and blues classics at restaurants and bars.

Welcome to the forum and a bunch of special musos of which some are good friends and very able guitarists in their own style preferences.
When you said Northern suburb ek was sommer homesick. I was born in Bellville and grew up in Tiger Valley.

Beware, this forum is addictive, the competitions lekker and frustrating at the same time especially if the genre is outside of skill depth.

Hope to hear more of you especially in the dark art of jazz chords ?

The best advice I ever got as a guitarist was to play bass ? But I see no basses in your collection - I've found the habit rather hard to kick!

The monthly challenges are go place to flex your recording muscles, the DIY section for inspiration and the lounge for shooting the <poop>. And feel free to post gigs/video of performances - I'm a huge fan of re-imagined jazzed-up tunes/covers.

Re "dark art of jazz chords"... I am always amused at the sense of intimidation guys have when it comes to jazz chords. It's not that mysterious or difficult. Plus it's easy to sound jazzy if you're playing with the right bass-player. ?

Yea Meron, I realised that I left some gear out. I must confess that I do not touch the bass at all lately. There is just soooo much to learn on the guitar and so little time in the day... Thank you for the warm welcome!

couldn't agree more. especially if you're playing jazz! gives you a feel for rhythm, timing, etc. just picked up a second-hand beater bass from someone on the forum - it's a really good little thumper, i must say. and light on the fingers, too.

but it sounds like you have a handle on most things jazz there, man...
